Links - Term 3 Week 1 Dear Friend of PLC From The Deputy PrincipalStaff UpdateAs we welcome our students back to Semester 2, we also have three teaching staff members who have each welcomed their first baby over the holiday break. Zayja McCartan, Sabrina Earsman and Genevieve Letherbarrow all delivered healthy baby boys! We wish them our heartfelt congratulations and know they will enjoy this beautiful and special time with their young families. At the same time, we also have staff returning from Maternity Leave this term – Joanna Gray is returning as Year 12 Co-ordinator in the Boarding House and Joanna Massey is back in the P.E Department. Familiar faces, Gemma Freel and Lesley Kaye, are also returning from their well-deserved Long Service Leave. We are delighted to introduce some new staff joining our team this term - Andrew Reid will be joining the ILT team from Penrhos College; Camlin Quin joins the Science Department; Eve York is the new Year 11 Boarding House Co-ordinator; Jade Zimmerman takes on the role of Music Administration Assistant; and Jill Willetts has commenced as a Junior School LEC teacher. We also offer our congratulations for some internal promotions. Katherine Hazelwood has been appointed to the role of Boarding House Deputy for Pastoral Care & Wellbeing, and Ming Till has accepted the role of Acting Assistant Head of Science. At PLC, we pride ourselves not only on nurturing inspiring young women, but also fostering and advancing the exceptional staff who support our girls to achieve their very best. Pursuant to this, Junior School Music Teacher, Hilary Price recently took leave to embark on an exciting new challenge - a Masters of Music at HNU in California, USA. This Masters course has further developed Hilary’s pedagogical philosophy and methodology to ensure quality music education for all her students through inclusive, engaging, and active music-making practices and approaches. - Chris Robinson, Deputy Principal Term 3 Co-CurricularCo-curricular programmes are up and running again! Please visit the Co-curricular website on home.plc to review activities, download the latest timetable and to book. The New NormalAs the world faces the COVID-19 virus, uncertainty seems to be part of the terrain we negotiate on a daily basis. It impacts more than our health, family, work life, international markets and travel. Social distancing and a renewed focus on staying healthy and hygienic seems to be part of the new normal. In seeking answers and comfort, I find it helpful to remember that God doesn’t need social distancing as we do – in fact, we could come to God and always be welcome. We could shelter from the storm, ask and pray, knowing that God reached out to us first and still does in times when we feel most unlovable. Then some people brought their little children to Jesus. They wanted him to put his hands on each child's head. They wanted him to pray for them. But the disciples told the people that they should not do that. Jesus said to them, ‘Do not stop the children. Let them come to me. People must become like these children so that God can rule their lives. That is what the kingdom of heaven is like.’ - Rev Manie Strydom, Chaplain Term 3 Free Dress DayFree Dress Day will be held on Friday 28 August. Student Free Dress Day contributions support a local charity, Trillion Trees, whose mission is to bring people together to plant and grow trees and to achieve healthy, productive, sustainable landscapes. They also sponsor our two World Vision children, 10-year-old Josephine from Zambia and 13-year-old Lucy from Kenya. Free Dress Days are non-compulsory. Students who wish to participate will need to have made the $10 contribution which covers all three Free Dress Days. Trybooking tickets are still available here for anyone who was unable to contribute in Term 1 or Term 2. Further information on the theme can be found here. Term 3 Co-CurricularThe PLC Lighthouse co-curricular programme runs before and after school and supports the wellbeing curriculum provided at PLC. The whole school joined together for an Assembly on Tuesday morning, followed by a Junior School Assembly to present the Semester 2 leaders with their badges. Click here to find out who our new leaders are. Yesterday marked the Junior School’s first Daily Physical Fun session. The first day had the Junior School staff showing the way with an amazing 1980s styled aerobics workout designed by Ms McGurk. For the dance challenged amongst us, it was a trying time, but the students loved it! The girls then performed their own dance work out. The activity was brief and was all that it promised – accessible, fun and it got our hearts pumping! Photos and video of the launch can be found on our latest Instagram post. The overall programme has been developed to improve basic fundamental movement skills and overall fitness, while building self-confidence and competence, by exposing the students to a wide range of physical activities. The activities will be adjusted so the girls can take part in their uniform and their timetabled day will commence as normal at 8.45 am. Tomorrow we will see the annual Junior School Cross Country Carnival at Manners Hill Park. All details can be found on the PLC App, including all start times and student requirements. Playgroup@PLCPlaygroup@PLC sessions are open for parents attending with their 0 - 4 year-old children on Friday mornings during School terms. Leadership ApplicationsYear 11 students have now also submitted their leadership applications and this week we will begin the process to find our new Head Prefect and Deputy Head Prefect. The Year 11s have done a great job expressing their leadership vision based on the four values of PLC – Integrity (Honore), Learning, Community and Effort (Labore). Parents and Guardians of Year 11 students have been sent information about the election process. I also had the pleasure of speaking to the Year 11 and Year 12 students about the voting process and the changes that have been made for this year. If you have any questions about the process, please email me on rebecca.watts@plc.wa.edu.au. Parent-Teacher-Student InterviewsStudents in Years 7 to 9 have been involved in Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews. Our teachers were impressed with the way the girls were able to easily navigate through Microsoft Teams for their virtual interviews. I hope that the feedback gained from these interviews helps to guide the girls to an even more successful Term 3. UniformAt PLC, we pride ourselves on our uniform and we want the girls looking their best at all occasions. For Senior School Assemblies, the girls are required to wear blazers and ties. Year 12 Leavers JumpersThe Year 12s have special permission to wear their new Leavers Jumpers designed by our Creative Arts Captain, Laura Quinlivan. Well done to Laura on the design and thank you to Mr Craze (Year 12 Co-ordinator) for his organisation of the jumpers. - Rebecca Watts, Head of Senior School Senior School Upcoming EventsYear 12 & Boarders Kapture PhotoDate: Friday 31 July Senior School AssemblyDate: Friday 7 August Founders' Day ServiceDate: Tuesday 18 August Senior School Arts DayDate: Thursday 20 August Year 12 Father Daughter Dinner DanceDate: Thursday 20 August Mid-Term BreakDate: Friday 21 August - Monday 24 August Parent Events Coming UpYear 12 Parent Coffee MorningDate: Friday 7 August PLC Parents MeetingDate: Tuesday 11 August Year 6 Parents Winter WarmerDate: Friday 14 August |
