March Careers in CVM

Hello! Welcome to the third installment of the Careers in CVM newsletter, dedicated to inform internal stakeholders in UF CVM about trends in the veterinary career fields, opportunities for events and workshops, and resources available to our UF CVM students, faculty, and staff.

With this edition, we are now about half way through the semester and it'll be over before we know it! As we near the home stretch and the days feel longer and longer, never forget your hard work will pay off.

Employer's Corner

If you are a few months from graduation (or just day-dreaming of the light at the end of the vet school tunnel) transitioning from college to the work force and getting that first job can be quite a learning curve.  Get some great information straight from those that are hiring, take a tip or two from VetCor as they share tips for your first veterinary job!

Student Tip - Interview Do's and Don'ts

Make sure you do (and don't) these following tips summarized from the professional association VetCAN (Veterinary Career Advisors Network).

Do's:
-Do be polite and considerate to everyone and everything from the moment you arrive. Multiple employers have shared they will watch applicants as they wait in the lobby before the interview to see how they interact with clients, patients, organization pets, and organization employees.

-Do determine the next steps.  At the end of the interview ask about next steps in the process to understand their timeline and process for moving forward, this can help shed some light on how to proceed.

Don'ts:
-Don't forget to bring up your research.  If you did research on the website, social media sites, or even in talking with employees/clients bring this up in your interview through your answers or the questions you ask at the end.  This can highlight your research and help you further understand their focus as an organization.

-Don't ask the typical interview questions to the employer. Chances are the hiring groups have heard "What do you like the most about this organization?" multiple times.  Stand out and ask some more in-depth and process questions rather than just fact finding questions.  For some examples of great questions check out our UF CVM Careers Interviewing Resource in the Education Center.

Interviewing is a great skill to develop and can be continually refined and improved throughout your career development.  You can improve through mock interviews either scheduled in-person with Katelyn Jerles or through the online Gator CareerLink Mock Interview Module (with an Associate Interview now available!).
