No Images? Click here Dear friend of PLC As Term 3 nears an end, the events within our community have been both exciting and highly anticipated. Athletics girls have been training hard in the chilly mornings of this term for the IGSSA Athletics Carnival. Led by Sports Captain, Emily Bradley, the girls were well prepared and very excited to showcase their hard work. Congratulations to Annie Pfeiffer (Year 7) who broke three IGSSA records for the 200-meter run, 800-meter run and the Long Jump and Hana Yusoff (Year 7) who broke an IGSSA record in the 800-meter run. PLC finished third overall - well done girls! View the full results. View the gallery. The extraordinary artistic talent of girls across year groups will be showcased in the upcoming PLC Senior School Art Exhibition which opens on Friday. It looks incredible and the effort that has been put into these masterpieces is especially evident in the Year 12 final pieces. We welcome the entire PLC community to visit and enjoy the showcase in support of our talented art students. Of course, exams may seem to cast a shadow on the end of Term 3 for the older girls. This round of exams is the second for the Year 10s, however with the success they had in their first set I imagine the girls will learn even more from this round. For Year 11s, these exams are their final efforts of work for this year and leads them into an exciting next chapter. As for Year 12s, the ending of this term is perhaps more ceremonious as we have our final Mondays, final assemblies and soon, final exams. I would like to wish all girls from all Years good luck for their exams and to remind them that while exams are very important, never forget you are more than just a number! - Rieley Stewart, Head Prefect Friday 22 SeptemberTerm 3 concludes Saturday 23 September - Monday 9 OctoberSchool holidays Tuesday 10 OctoberTerm 4 commences Thursday 12 OctoberLighthouse Event - Professor Lea Waters, 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm, Senior School Auditorium. Day and is all about starting meaningful conversations with others and talking to people who may be struggling. While we should hopefully be checking in with each other regularly, not just once a year, this day does give us the opportunity to be more intentional in showing concern and helping each other. I encourage you to spend time today checking in with those around you and initiating meaningful conversations. The R U OK? Day website has some fantastic resources to aid you in this. PLC Lighthouse Facebook PageWe recently launched the PLC Lighthouse Facebook page as a platform to keep our community informed around what's happening behind the scenes of the Lighthouse, as well as receiving practical tips to help you incorporate good health and wellbeing into your everyday life. You can like the page here. Lighthouse Event: Professor Lea WatersWe can now confirm that following the postponement of the Professor Lea Waters The Strength Switch book launch in June, a new event with Professor Waters will be held on Thursday 12 October. This event will no longer be a book launch. Instead, Professor Waters will deliver a key note presentation on strength-based parenting, offering practical tips and advice for parents, as well as highlighting the research and evidence behind her approach. Professor Waters' new book, The Strength Switch will still be available for the special price of $29.95 and guests will still have the opportunity to ask questions and get their book signed following Professor Waters' presentation. Date: Thursday 12 October - Laura Allison, Director of Wellbeing Mandarin SuccessStudents at PLC begin Language B in Pre-Kindy. They study French until the end of Year 2, then can choose to study French or Mandarin from Year 3 onwards. As a Primary Years Programme school, we encourage students to continue to study a second language until the end of their formal studies. Studying a second language not only improves a student’s linguistic skills, but opens her mind to different cultures and to being more internationally-minded. Some of our students recently participated in the WA State Chinese Writing Competition organised by the Chinese Teachers’ Association of WA. Congratulations to Emma Ryan (Year 4) who came 2nd and Edith Hellings (Year 4) who was awarded Excellence from the Junior School, and to Julianna Salazar Franco (Year 9) who was also awarded Excellence from the Senior School. In keeping with all things Mandarin, some of our Junior School girls were very fortunate to have the opportunity this week to enjoy a dance and music performance in the Hazel Day Drama Centre by one of China’s most highly regarded performance institutions, the Zhejiang Art Academy. Zhejiang Province in China is a sister state to Western Australia. It’s all about the Arts!Plenty is happening in all aspects of the Arts in Junior School this term. Our youngest students continue to thrive through the Every Day Music Programme for Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2. While students in the Suzuki Strings Programme will participate in their graduation this Sunday. We congratulate them on their hard work and continued efforts. Petite Chorale and the Years 5/6 Choir had success at the Sing Festival earlier in the term. The Year 5 band and xylophone ensemble entertained grandparents and special guests during Arts Week, and the recent Junior School Concert Band performance at the WA Junior Concert Band Festival was also a highlight. It is wonderful to see and hear the results of the commitment of our young musicians. The Year 3 students have incorporated their music studies into their Unit of Inquiry about structures by investigating the ways that structures/buildings influence the sound produced in the space. They discussed the size, shape, materials, position of the audience vs performer, etc. They then recorded themselves singing in the Chapel and made predictions about the optimum features of spaces for musical performances. Finally, they looked at pictures of buildings for performance from ancient to modern times, and discussed the elements of shape, materials, audience, etc. In Visual Arts we are busy finishing off the ‘Princess Margaret Hospital’ Big Splash dolphin. The Year 4 students are ready to send off our “I am 9/10” drawings, which we have also made into iBooks. Art Club has just finished with the students learning the new technique of overlay printing, painting and the Years 1-3 group even learnt a few more sewing techniques to create a small elephant toy. Next term, the Year 4 student’s central idea is ‘Economic activity relies on systems of production, distribution and consumption of goods and services’. In Art they will create products including calico shopping bags to sell at Open Garden Day. The students will use the lens of Visual Arts to learn about supply and demand, the production and distribution of goods and their responsibility as consumers. The unit is an example of transdisciplinary learning and collaboration between disciplines. The Year 5 students have been working collaboratively in Art to create tents for the playground. In Drama, the Year 4 classes are finishing presenting and interpreting each other’s masked performances of their mystery poems. Each class was given a poem kept secret from the other class from which they then devised and performed a masked physical theatre performance. The other class interpreted the performance. Year 5 are starting an investigation of the 16th century (yet still relevant!) Italian theatre form of commedia dell'arte, which led to the development of mime, slapstick comedy, clowning and archetypal characters we see in many stories throughout history and today. Year 1 are completing an exploration of narrative by performing improvised scenes from Cinderella, which they have been retelling in class. - Louise Peyton, Head of Junior School JUNIOR SCHOOL KEY EVENTSTerm 3 Week 9 Parent BulletinDownload the latest Parent Bulletin School Assembly (Years 1 - 6) hosted by Year 5Date: Friday 15 September Chapel Years 3 - 6 (hosted by Year 3F)Date: Monday 18 September Year 3 Learning JourneyDate: Monday 18 September Junior School Colour RunDate: Thursday 21 September (please note the date has changed to what was listed in the tri-fold calendar) Last Day of Term 3Friday 22 September (normal dismissal times) From the Director of LearningThis week at a Senior Leadership meeting, I presented a paper on The New Basics: Big data reveals the skills young people need for the New Work Order by The Foundation for Young Australians (2016). The report confirmed that Australia is undergoing the most significant disruption in the world of work since the industrial revolution and how we respond as educators has huge implications for the next generation. Beyond a doubt, the growing demand from employers for young workers is that they have enterprise skills. These are transferable skills that allow young people to be enterprising so they can navigate complex careers across a range of industries and professions. They include problem solving, financial literacy, digital literacy, teamwork and communication. Demand for these skills is 70 percent higher than it has been in the past. The Australian Curriculum includes seven general capabilities. These are: literacy, numeracy, ICT, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding. The International Baccalaureate approach to learning covers thinking skills, communication skills, self-management skills, research skills and social skills. The Senior Leadership team looked at the lists of skills and capabilities to find where there was crossover and where there are gaps and areas that needed more attention to help guide the future direction of learning at PLC. - Neesha Flint, Director of Learning Student AchievementsCongratulations to Morven Johnston (Year 7) who has had a very busy and successful year in the world of Highland Dancing. This culminated in the 'World Championship' at the Cowal Games in Dunoon, Scotland, where she won her age group (technically called the Scottish Championship). Her most recent achievements in 2017 are:

Year 7 Family Service Project Tangaroa Blue Beach Clean UpThe PLC Family Service Projects provide the opportunity for parents and daughters to participate in service learning together. We would like to bring to your attention the service project offered to our Year 7 daughters and parents, led by PLC parent Eliza Clapin. Marine debris, and in particular plastic, is one of today's major environmental challenges. Please help us be a part of the solution by joining the Tangaroa Blue Beach Clean Up on Saturday 14 October starting at Cottesloe Beach at 8.30 am and running for around two hours. We hope to get as far as the Swanbourne Surf Club if we have enough volunteers. Children will need an adult with them and we will be meeting at the beach. The only thing you will need to bring is water, hats and sunscreen. To register your interest or for further information, please email Year 7 Parent Eliza Clapin at Eliza.clapin@bigpond.com. Refer to the Tangaroa's fact sheets and video about marine debris impacts to learn more. Parents@PLC Pastoral Care LiaisonDid you know that the Parents@PLC have a Pastoral Care liaison whose role is to assist PLC families in times of need, including during family illnesses or other crises? This year’s liaison is Tammy Edwards. How the Pastoral Care Liaison can helpAs the needs of each family may vary depending on their unique situation, Tammy’s role is to assist families in any way that they feel would be helpful, in a discrete and confidential manner. She also liaises with other parents and the School to organise rosters of people who would like to provide assistance. Some examples of assistance that can be provided include; meal rosters, transport for family members, household chores, food shopping, care rosters or helping with children drop offs/pick-ups. The assistance can be arranged directly with the family or with a close friend or relative and is done very discretely so as to not cause any embarrassment or distress to the family in need. As a psychologist, Tammy is also able to assist families with accessing broader community resources and support if needed. Any PLC parent or family member who requires assistance or support, or would like to volunteer to assist other PLC families in need are encouraged to contact Tammy. Any request for assistance will be treated discretely and with sensitivity.
