Teagan de Seguin, CSL Student Intern I am in my third year of a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Women and Gender Studies. I am very excited to be the CSL Student Intern for Fall 2019! I was fortunate to discover CSL in my first year of university, and I knew it was for me. I ended up finishing my certificate in my first year, and went on to get a job coordinating service-learning opportunities with Residence Services here at the U of A. CSL was a transformational experience for me, and I am so excited to be able to share that with other students. Jay Friesen, CSL Partnership Coordinator My name is Jay, and I'm thrilled to be joining the CSL team fulltime. My first experience with CSL was in 2008, when I partnered as a student at E4C's ArtStart program, which opened my eyes to the possibilities of how I could engage with communities. Since then, I've had many incredible experiences both at the university and the local community. Now, I'm looking forward to finding more opportunities to weave these two communities together in the future as a Partnership Coordinator. Outside the university, I'm often found watching stand-up comedy, spending time with my nieces and nephew, and enjoying my time as reigning dodgeball champion with my team at the McCauley Boys & Girls Club. Diane McKen, CSL Administrator I am happy to rejoin the CSL team as the Administrator. I come from the Departments of Linguistics, Philosophy, and Women's and Gender Studies as the Undergraduate Advisor. I was previously seconded to CSL for a one year term in 2018. When I am not on campus I enjoy being with my grandchildren, riding my horse and volunteering at the Edmonton Folk Fest (not all at the same time!). Razak Oduro, CSL Evaluation Coordinator I am a Ph.D candidate at the Department of Human Ecology in the Faculty of ALES. My research interest lies in anti-poverty initiatives, policy and collaboration. For my doctoral research, I am examining social movement organizing against poverty in Edmonton focusing on the work of EndPovertyEdmonton. To better improve the lives of individuals living in poverty, I hope my study will enhance poverty-related policies and outcomes. HUMANITIES 101 The fall semester has arrived and with it comes a new semester of Humanities 101 programming. Our on-campus Tuesday evening class begins on Tuesday September 24th and runs until December 10th, 2019. This semester our theme is land. We will explore the concept of land through a number of different lenses including history, anthropology, physics, colonialism, and feminism. Our study of the topic of land will include questions such as how do environmental policies exist in capitalism, are sasquatches real, and how does our perspective change when we think about earth from the perspective of the cosmos? In partnership with Capital Region Housing we are also running a Humanities 101 class at Amity House located in the community of Dickensfield. This class runs on the first Friday of each month over the lunch hour. We will explore the theme community, with guest talks from invited faculty and community members. Classes are drop-in, and a light lunch will be provided. Childcare is available for anyone attending this class. This semester Humanities 101 is piloting an alumni class. The alumni class is being offered for folks who are long-time learners with our Tuesday evening class. The alumni class will allow us to make space for new learners in our Tuesday evening class, while continuing to foster the lifetime learning community that has been developing in Humanities 101. The alumni class is partnering with FGSR’s Emerging Speaker Series and classes will be a combination of talks at the Edmonton Public Library Strathcona Branch and on-campus seminars. The alumni class will run on the third and fourth Wednesday of each month. At WINGS of Providence this term our theme is titled "Mother Earth: Exploring the Relationships between Women and the Land". From organizing around issues of land to tending the earth’s resources women’s experiences, throughout history and around the world, have shaped and been shaped by the land. Together and with guest instructors, we will explore the many varied and complex relationships between women and land. PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT The Beverly Daycare Society & Family Resource Centre has served northeast Edmonton since 1972. We run a fully accredited non-profit daycare centre, along with a range of family support programs that are available to the broader community. This is our first semester partnering with CSL, and we are excited to be working with a group of students to develop a strategic marketing plan for our organization! |
