Fear Team UpdateEach summer, a team of undergraduate researchers are assembled to work on The Chapman University Survey of American Fears The students work on group projects, such as researching new content areas for the FEAR survey and then analyzing the results later in the summer, receiving advanced training in statistics, research methods, data analysis and specialized software, beforehand.
Staffer Chaperones Junior Ambassadors to JapanOn July 5th Wilkinson College Administrative Assistant David Krausman boarded a plane with a delegation of ten high school students
and one co-chaperone bound for Fukui, Japan. The delegation of students represented the city of Fullerton, California in a cultural exchange that has been going on between the two cities for almost 30 years.
Babbie Ranks High in Most Assigned AuthorsThe Babbie Center is pleased to announce that Dr. Earl Babbie, Campbell Professor Emeritus, has been recognized as one of the world’s most assigned authors in college courses. In an analysis of over 6 million college syllabi, Dr. Babbie ranks 106 out of 1,440,948 authors assigned, ahead of such greats as F. Scott Fitzgerald (121) and Thomas Jefferson (144). Shakespeare was #1. Congratulations Dr. Babbie!

The Social Psychology of Hate
Dr. Pete Simi, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology
Hate is part of the human condition. It is both biblical and built into our evolutionary history. The essential components of hate contribute to human survival but also play a leading role in some of history’s most destructive acts including genocide, terrorism, and various other forms of violence. In this masterclass, we will discuss how to think about the essence of hate, how to study hate, and what happens when individual and collective identity becomes organized around hate. This master class will analyze the 2020 presidential campaign, including an assessment of candidates and what is at stake for the American presidency.
