2015/16 season comes to an end

After the challenging weather during Spring, DEWNR was behind schedule and many burns were brought into Autumn.  Ideal weather conditions during March and April allowed the fire crew to catch up on all the burning from Spring as well as completing the schedule for Autumn.

DEWNR undertook 30 prescribed burns, treating 3,799 ha. SA Water undertook 2 burns, treating 38 hectares. There are a couple of late season burns to still go ahead.

How do we plan a burn?

Over winter and in the lead up to the Spring burning season, DEWNR's Good Living blog will track the planning process of prescribed burning.

Check out this week’s story – an overview of the 6 steps to burn planning. In the coming months, each of these steps will be explored in more detail. Sign up to the Good Living blog to make sure you don’t miss a post, and to get even more connected with South Australia’s environment.

BMAP open for public consultation

The CFS are in the process of developing regional Bushfire Management Area Plans (BMAP) for Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges and Limestone Coast. The plans focus on identifying life and property assets at risk from bushfire. The assets are assessed against the impact of bushfires and mitigating treatments are allocated.

Assets have then been assessed for bushfire risk against factors such as:

-  Potential sources of ignition
-  The ability of fire to establish, spread and its intensity
-  The threat to assets from radiant heat
-  Susceptibility of the occupants or the structure and potential consequences.

The AMLR and Limestone Coast BMAP is now available for public consultation until 14 June 2016. And the Limestone Coast BMAP is available for public consultation until 3 June 2016.

Open House style Community Meetings are being held at the following locations for the AMLR plan.

  • Stirling - Adelaide Hills Council, Stirling office (west wing), 19th May, 5-8pm
  • Gumeracha - Gumeracha Bowling Club, 26th May, 5-8pm
  • Blackwood - Blackwood Community Centre, 30th May, 5-8pm
  • Gawler / Barossa area - Venue and date tba
