NY 3Rs Association, Inc. Webinar: RFID

RFID is another of those technologies that have been slowly, but surely, moving into libraries. It is already used with regularity in large stores like WalMart; there is a good chance your local supermarket also uses RFID. At its simplest, it transmits data, e.g., barcode information, using radio waves. Libraries primarily use RFID to read the barcode labels on their materials. This class will discuss what RFID is and how it works, look at companies and libraries that have implemented, and find out why others have not taken this step.

This class will be held on March 23rd from 2-4pm, and costs $15. You can register for this class here.

Senator Patty Richie Conducting Love Your Library Campaign

Senator Patty Richie of the 48th Senate District, which covers parts of Jefferson, Oswego, and St. Lawrence counties, is asking for members of her district to vote for their favorite library. In addition, she is asking for people to nominate an outstanding librarian, who will be presented with a special certificate.

EBSCO Omnifile Usage Increasing

NNYLN provides to all libraries in the region access to EBSCOHost's Wilson OmniFile Full Text Select database. This database contains full-text articles covering the core subjects, including applied sciences, art, education, humanities, law, social sciences, and technology.

This database currently sees an average of over 51,000 searches a month, with over 26,000 full-text articles downloaded in the past 6 months.

Libraries can access this database via a provided username and password combination, or by using IP authentication. You can learn more about how to utilize this database by watching this short video.

Lake Placid Olympic Museum Scrapbook Now On New York Heritage

The Henry Uihlein Collection is a scrapbook created by Henry Uihlein II, a successful businessman and internationally known philanthropist. He was instrumental in bringing national and international speed skating events to the region.

This scrapbook contains an extensive collection of articles, pictures, and objects relating to the speed skating world around Lake Placid and Saranac Lake in the late 1910s and early 1920s. This collection can be viewed on New York Heritage.

The Lake Placid Olympic Museum, located in the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York is open year round for visitors to explore the history and heritage of winter sports in Lake Placid. You can learn more about the museum on their website.

NYLA Legislative Lobby Day Successful
