Links eNewsletter - Term 2 Week 7 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the DeputyReflecting on another rich week of opportunities at PLC, I have been struck once again by our strong sense of community. We have been treated to a range of activities for Reconciliation Week, many of which have brought our community together on the Quad. The Gorna Liyarn dancers’ performance yesterday was a highlight, not only because of the students’ beautiful and skillful performances but also because of the atmosphere in the audience on all four sides of the Quad as we celebrated the richness and diversity of our community. Students also had the opportunity to have their faces painted on the Quad today in recognition of Reconciliation Week. Conversations at PLC with Caroline BrazierTuesday night's Conversations at PLC with Class of 1988 graduate and actor, Caroline Brazier was outstanding. Caroline spoke about how her passion for acting ignited during her time at PLC thanks to her then Drama Teacher, Jenny Hetherington. She described how the #metoo movement had changed her industry for the better and how resilience was an important character trait for all actors who faced regular knock-backs before getting their big break. Thank you to all who attended. Future-Proofing PLCYesterday, the second of three future-proofing PLC workshops took place in the View Street Building. Parents, students, and teachers came together as a community to work with educationalist Greg Curtis to discuss the direction of our teaching and learning strategy. It was inspiring to observe passion and energy and a strong sense of commonly held values. The most powerful aspect of these sessions, however, has been the intelligence, confidence, and poise of the student members of this group. This was a humbling reminder of the need to listen to the opinions of the younger generation. The students conversed with teachers and parents whom they do not necessarily know and all of whom have a wealth of experience and skills. Their contributions to the discussions were appreciated and valued. Their experience of the world is very different from ours and their challenges are considerable. Their insight, however, is phenomenal and should reassure us all that the future is in good hands as long as we support them in having a voice. - Neil Walker – Deputy Principal - Teaching and Learning StaffingIt is with mixed emotion that I announce Ms Sue Seeber has decided to retire at the end of the term. She is looking forward to spending more time with her grandchildren. Ms Seeber has worked with countless students and parents at PLC, let alone the thousands of students and teachers she has assisted and guided over her career. Her last day is Wednesday 23 June. As a result of Ms Seeber’s retirement, we have appointed Mrs Felicity Petersen. Mrs Petersen has extensive experience in education in the UK and locally, including 10 years as Head of Enrichment (Learning Support and Extension) at Thomas’s London Day School. She joins us from St Mark’s School. I am sure the community will warmly welcome her to PLC in Term 3. Reconciliation WeekThis week we have celebrated Reconciliation Week with a range of activities for all our students to participate in. A highlight was the creation of a sand mural on the Quad and our Gorna Liyarn dance troupe performing. Thank you to our Reconciliation Captains, Tianna Bin Jacob and Katelyn Wain, our Gorna Liyarn students, and the Indigenous Scholarship Programme Co-ordinator, Miss Bin Swani for their efforts in making this year's Reconciliation Week at PLC such a success. Inter-house Athletics CarnivalOn Tuesday 15 June, we will be holding our annual Inter-house Athletics Carnival at WA Athletics Stadium. This is a great opportunity for all students to get involved and support their peers. If your daughter requires transport, she is able to sign up for a seat on a bus to and/or from the venue. A link has been sent to her via email and reminders have been placed in the Daily Notices. Boarding students have already been allocated a seat to and from the carnival and are not required to complete the signup. The buses will leave from PLC at 7.20 am outside the Boarding House. If your daughter does not require return transport back to PLC, she will need to be collected from the WA Athletics Stadium by 2.45 pm. Students who have not been picked up from the WA Athletics Stadium by 2.45 pm will be returned to PLC by bus. If your daughter is not able to participate in any events, we would still love for her to attend as she will have the opportunity to help at the carnival and show support for her House. In the event of inclement weather, a decision to cancel the carnival will be made by 6.30 am. Parents/students will be notified by the PLC App. If a cancellation does occur, a normal school day will resume with students wearing the correct school uniform. Your daughter has also been reminded to ensure she brings her lunch with her (she will not be able to access the cafeteria or vending machines) and that she will need parent permission in writing if she is required to leave the carnival early (please email me at rebecca.watts@plc.wa.edu.au). To help keep your daughter safe, we ask that you collect her from the stadium where staff will be waiting. Thank you for your support with this and I look forward to meeting those of you who are able to attend on the day. - Rebecca Watts, Head of Senior School Senior School Reconciliation Assembly

What Happened This Week in the Boarding HouseFor the next six editions of Links, I thought it would be interesting to showcase the unique programmes and activities run by our fantastic staff. Our Year 9 Co-ordinator, Alice Creasy, with the help of her assistant, Juliette Isaacs, has built the Year 9 programme based on the themes of gratitude and respect. Miss Creasy has a weekly meeting with the girls based on exploring these themes using activities, real-life examples, or varying media forms. As you walk into the Year 9 corridor, there is a weekly gratitude poster where girls are free to write up things they are grateful for. Fortnightly, the girls will choose a meaningful and inspiring quote, which is displayed at the front entrance. Each term, Alice will also choose interesting posters to display on the walls. In Term 1, it was inspirational women. The girls have also done ‘About Me’ postcards which are part of a greater collection of items that Miss Creasy is gathering from the girls to be returned to them when they are in Year 12. - Katherine Hazlewood – Boarding House Deputy (Wellbeing and Pastoral Care) Containers For ChangePLC has launched Containers for Change in partnership with Good Sammy Recycle. Good Sammy will receive 2 cents from each container (plus administration as a super collector), whilst 8 cents from each container goes to PLC to put towards PLC environmental sustainability projects. Good Sammy offers meaningful employment opportunities for West Australians living with disabilities. The yellow wheelie bins across both Junior and Senior campuses and the boarding house are clearly labelled with what can be brought in (also listed above). - Linda Malone – Head of Service and Community Partnerships 2021 Dance ShowcasePLC's 2021 Dance Showcase is set to stun audiences with students across the Senior School ready to deliver their Raison D’etre (Reason for Being) with the title of the show of the same name.
