WELCOME

As we come to the end of another CSL term of learning and community projects, I want to highlight both what CSL has accomplished, and what exciting things lie ahead.

We are very proud to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Humanities 101 program.  Many people have contributed over the years to create a uniquely accessible university experience for the community, both on campus and at the Wings Shelter.  I especially want to acknowledge the many women faculty and staff, in Arts and beyond, who have so generously devoted their intellect and creativity to these efforts, often without fanfare and recognition.  Please see below the 'Exhibition of Women's Knowledge' hosted by Women's and Gender Studies' femlab, and the Humanities program May conference details.

I hope to see you at the CSLebration next week, where we showcase some student accomplishments and recognize some outstanding CSL instructors.

PEOPLE

We say goodbye and bon voyage to our Winter 2018 CSL Student Intern, Eunice. She is leaving our office but participating in our new Global Service-Learning & Solidarity in Nicaragua course this spring. Thank you for all your hard work and best wishes!

Eunice Doroni, CSL Student Intern                                                    I thoroughly enjoyed my time as CSL's intern. It was exhilarating meeting so many different people from the Edmonton non-profit community. This position showed me that when you love what you do, it doesn't really feel like work at all. Although my time as the intern is coming to a close, I will probably be doing much more to promote the program after the fact, knowing how much it has impacted me and my journey, and the others I've met as an intern. Thank you for having me CSL -- it was a blast!

HUMANITIES 101

The Humanities 101 class at Wings of Providence celebrated the end of this semester with a
graduation that took place on March 21, 2018. We will also be hosting an art show, 7 Years: An
Exhibition of Women’s Knowledge
, at the UAlberta campus in the Women and Gender Studies’
femlab from April 16 to June 15, 2018. This art show will feature poetry and projects produced
by women who have participated in this class over the years.

The on-campus Humanities 101 class will be celebrating its graduation on April 17, 2018. We
had a large class this semester that included returning students as well as many new faces. This
semester we explored the topic The Power of Naming, critically thinking about who has the
power to name, the consequences of being named, and how names can become a tool for
resistance. We looked at the power of naming in a wide range of topics that included: cities,
gender, Indigenous identity, bodies, and political correctness in comedy.

Humanities 101 is celebrating its 10th year with CSL. In recognition of this, we will be holding a
celebration on Friday May 11, 2018 to open our conference Connections: Conversations,
Workshops, and Celebration
. This celebration will feature work that has come out of our
learning in Humanities 101 over the past decade! If you would like to join us for some cake and
mingling please email us at so that we can pass on the event details.

We want to extend a thank you to all the support provided by the CSL placement students
who helped us prepare for our upcoming conference.

7 Years: An Exhibition of Women’s Knowledge

The HUM 101 program is a CSL and University of Alberta-supported initiative that strives to make university as accessible as possible by removing institutional and financial barriers. HUM 101 cultivates a community of diverse adult learners that values all types of knowledge.

In 2011 the Women’s and Gender Studies department formalized their relationship with and support for the Hum 101 program at Wings of Providence, a second-stage women’s shelter for women and children who have experienced family violence. Each term on Wednesday afternoons across the city from campus, staff and faculty facilitate a free university-level course in Eileen’s room. Together we learn and share.

This collection of poetry and prose represents the knowledge of the many women who have graduated from the course.
