Residential Care - Deprescribing and MedStopper

Deprescribing

What is Deprescribing?

Medications that were good then, might not be the best choice now. Deprescribing is part of good prescribing – backing off when doses are too high, or stopping medications that are no longer needed.

At deprescribing.org the vision is to share and exchange information about deprescribing approaches and deprescribing research with the public, health care providers and researchers.

They offer tools to help patients and providers participate in deprescribing, information about ongoing and completed deprescribing initiatives and research projects in Canada and links to people around the world who are interested in deprescribing.

MedStopper

At medstopper.com you can:

  1. Search for medications by generic or brand name
  2. Select condition for which the medication is used
  3. Click the ADD button to include the medication into your MedStopper Plan

The MedStopper Plan will display the medications in order of stopping priority. RED highest stopping priority, GREEN lowest stopping priority.

DTO update: Increase in ransomware cyberattacks targeting doctors

There has been an increase in reports from doctors about attacks by ransomware, a type of malware that often involves compromised system security, temporary or permanent loss of information, and extortion of money from users. Because antivirus software does not provide sufficient protection from ransomware, doctors are encouraged to seek alternative solutions. For more detailed information about ransomware and suggestions for dealing with an attack, read “Ransomware – What should I do?”, a technical bulletin by Doctors Technology Office. Further resources related to technical issues affecting physicians are available on the Doctors Technology Office (DTO) technical bulletins.

New websites support prostate cancer and orthopaedic surgery patients

If I were Tom provides evidence-based support for men with prostate cancer. Developed by the Men’s Health Research Program at UBC with funding from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHI), the site features an interactive video drama about a man going through the stages of a prostate cancer, including initial diagnosis, treatment options, and living with the disease. A video series (also available on the If I Were Tom YouTube channel) featuring experts and people with first-hand experience provides additional information. For questions or more information, visit www.ifiweretom.ubc.ca or contact the Men’s Health Research Program (mens.health@ubc.ca).

TalkingWithDocs is a useful resource for doctors referring patients to orthopaedic surgeons. Created by Canadian orthopaedic surgeons Drs Brad Weening and Paul Zalzal, the website uses a series of short videos to educate patients and their families about topics including joint replacement surgery, fractures, sports injuries, how to prepare for a procedure, and possible risks of surgery.

Physicians’ Role in Benefit Coverage for Palliative First Nations Patients

Please note that physicians are now able to register First Nations patients for BC Palliative Care Benefits by completing forms, without waiting for a response from the First Nations Health Authority.

In addition, First Nations patients are able to access PharmaCare Plan P coverage. Changes to PharmaCare make it easier for health practitioners to help First Nations patients to immediately access a Plan P drug not covered by FNHA/NIHB (Non-insured Health Benefits). PharmaCare no longer requires a letter declining coverage from FNHA/NIHB.

In order to access Plan P, a BCPCB application must be completed by their primary care physician or nurse practitioner. See the BC PharmaCare newsletter for more information.
