Google Clears Pentagon to Use AI Tools in Classified Settings

Hello. Google agreed to let the Defense Department use its artificial-intelligence tools in classified settings, becoming the third AI company, with OpenAI and xAI, to reach such a deal in recent weeks.

The deal with the Pentagon allows Google's AI to be used in all lawful scenarios, WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the matter. More than 600 Google employees signed a letter asking Chief Executive Sundar Pichai not to go through with the deal on Monday. Read the full story.

Last fall, the Trump administration revealed criminal charges and sanctions against what it said was a transnational syndicate that had stolen billions of dollars from Americans and others through online scams. (WSJ)

  • Less than a month later, the Trump family’s crypto company, World Liberty Financial, said it had partnered with a virtual-currency venture called AB, one of whose projects—a planned blockchain-themed resort—had been led by two men sanctioned in the U.S. crackdown.

Fidelity Brokerage Services must pay $1.25 million to resolve a data-breach investigation by the state of Massachusetts. The broker-dealer failed to use adequate cybersecurity controls, allowing hackers to steal sensitive information about 77,000 customers in August 2024, state officials said Tuesday.

  • Fidelity must also hire an independent cybersecurity consultant and certify that cyber controls for customer data have been enhanced.

Handala Hack Team, which is linked to the Iranian government, on Tuesday said it had published the names and other personal details of 2,379 U.S. Marines stationed in the Persian Gulf region, according to a post on the group’s Telegram channel. The Pentagon is investigating. (WSJ)

Washington Mystics owner Monumental Sports & Entertainment is notifying more than 10,200 people that their personal information was stolen over two days in December. The company owns eight pro sports teams and five venues.

  • "[W]e have taken available measures to limit the potential that data may be misused in the future," Monumental said in a letter to customers.
