Getting All Food Sectors On Board
Let’s talk about the key food business sectors that need to apply for Food Act registration by 30 November 2018 in order to be registered before 28 February 2019.
As our partners in managing regulation of the Food Act 2014, we need your help to get those last businesses over the line.
As per the Transition Timetable, there a number of sectors that still need to register a Food Control Plan or a National Programme, including: extractors and packers of honey; transporters or distributors of food products; producers of horticultural food and horticultural packing operations; and grain processors.

Horticulture: Registering Growers & Packers
We’ve been working with Horticulture New Zealand and its associated product groups to help make Food Act registrations as easy as possible.
Three existing food schemes have now been assessed as meeting the requirements of the Food Act, and have been recognised as Food Control Plans (Section 40s).
These plans are: New Zealand Good Agricultural Practice (NZGAP); Global Good Agricultural Practice (GLOBALGAP); and British Retail Consortium – limited to fresh produce (BRC).

Fast-Track Recognition Process
Agencies and verifiers – if you want to be recognised under the 'fast-track recognition process', so you can begin to verify National Programme businesses, please apply before 30 November 2018.
As part of the Food Act implementation process, we will not accept fast-track recognition applications from agencies or verifiers after this date.
Any TA agency or verifier on the fast-track recognition process will need to: have been fully assessed by MPI or a delegate before 28 February, 2019; or provide us with evidence that an assessment appointment has been secured, and is scheduled to be completed before 31 August, 2019.

Alcoholic Beverage Guidance
We’re developing guidance to help manufacturers of alcoholic beverages to get their labels right. The guide will cover a range of topics specific to alcoholic beverages including exemptions, use of food additives and selling alcoholic beverages in a supermarket/grocery shop.
The first draft for testing was sent out on 19 September and the second draft went out 5 October. Thanks to everyone who provided feedback. We’ve received lots of great comments and suggestions. The guidance will be finalised in the next couple of weeks and will be available on the MPI website.

New Tools – Verifiers Academy
We are delighted to announce the release of some new learning tools in the Food Verifiers Academy.
Micro-Learning
These online activities are designed to be a quick way of learning and applying your understanding on small, focused topics. These can be used for people new to verification or to check your knowledge as a practitioner. Further tools are in development, so please check back regularly.
HACCP
This Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) page includes training materials and practice questions that a learner can work through. It’s useful pre-learning for a person preparing to attend a New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) or equivalent HACCP course and is also a refresher for those who have previously been assessed. Note that working through this page does not replace the need to have completed a full NZQA, or equivalent, course on HACCP.

Recognised Person Training Days
These full-day events have been scheduled for 28 November in Auckland, 3 December in Wellington and 6 December in Dunedin.
The theme of the programme is 'Coaching, Culture and Calibration'. These training days are suitable for all recognised persons and people training to become recognised persons including verifiers, evaluators and food safety officers.
We invite you to register your interest, if you haven’t already, by emailing us at foodact.2014@mpi.govt.nz. We will send out a formal invite for RSVP purposes in late October, along with the detailed agenda.
