To improve the visibility of which template a business has used, there has been an update to the FCP/National Programme public register to include “FCP Template Type” as a search field, and a new field displayed on both the site and Risk-Based Measures
(RBM) details pages.

Verifying from 1 March
When you are preparing to verify a food business, please check their registration status. If a business hasn’t started the process of registration, please immediately advise that business that they are operating illegally and advise the registration authority of their status.

Class Recognition and FCPs for Horticulture
We are pleased to announce that these auditors, who are approved by a certification body to operate within the schemes, are recognised as Food Act 2014 verifiers verifying horticulture operations. This is the first class recognition under the Food Act and these recognitions have their own register available here.

Egg Shelf-life Regime Changes for RMP Operators
In a positive move, New Zealand Food Safety has amended the shelf-life regime for clean un-cracked eggs to 35 days (from the previous recommended 15 days) at room temperature(from the previous 15 days) for Risk Management Programme (RMP)
operators under the Animal Products Act 1999. This is a big change for the industry.

Section 137 Review
We will soon be approaching Territorial Authorities (TAs) for comment for input into the statutory review process of section 137 of the Food Act 2014.
This section gives TAs exclusivity for verifying food business operating under a template Food Control Plan issued by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), entirely within one district, and selling food primarily directly to consumers.

Chocolate Recalls
You may have noticed an increase in food recalls for products containing dark chocolate. So it’s timely to talk about how these chocolate recalls affect food businesses, verifiers and consumers.
The recalls are associated with an imported dark chocolate product. Following a report of an allergic reaction by a consumer, testing of the dark chocolate found that it contained high levels of milk protein. The levels detected (>1000ppm) are considered to be of
significant concern for consumers allergic to milk proteins and others who wish to avoid milk proteins.

Enter the New Zealand Food Awards
Entries for the 2019 New Zealand Food Awards are open between 1 May and 31 May 2019.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has been a major sponsor of the New Zealand Food Awards since 2008 and has sponsored different award categories over that time.
The awards are owned and organised by Massey University. New Zealand Food Safety sponsors two categories of the awards – the Food Safety Culture Award and the Primary Sector Products Award. Finalists will be announced on 21 August 2019 and winners will be announced on 23 October 2019.
