Academic Hospital Medicine Fellows, Peter Barish and Zac Jacobs both received one of 10 national SHM Travel Awards issued to trainees whose abstracts were scored highly and who have the potential to contribute significantly to the field of hospital medicine. Publications Sujatha Sankaran, Ethel Wu, Margaret Fang, Raman Khanna, Madhavi Dandu, and James Harrison conducted a three year intervention in a remote tribal region of Southern India where they trained community health workers linked with a central clinic to diagnose and manage hypertension and showed excellent hypertension control rates. Madhavi Dandu published a paper on chemical irritants used in crowd control, such as tear gases and pepper sprays, are generally considered to be safe and to cause only transient pain and lacrimation. In this month’s issue of the Patient Centered Outcomes Research journal, James Harrison, Andy Auerbach, Wendy Anderson, Jonathan Duong, and Sherry Chen worked with HOMERuN and a group of patient advisors report findings of qualitative study exploring barriers and solutions to support patient stakeholder engagement in research. DHM Data Core Highlights In QI, data core collaborated with Ari Hoffman and Saj Patel to develop a new measure for how patients are sleeping in the hospital called “sleep opportunity”, which uses EHR data to measure the longest uninterrupted time period that patients experienced each night. In Administration, data core partnered with Annie Droste and Brad Monash to quantify the proportion of time that patients on different medical services spend on different units in the hospital, summarized by a mathematical formula called entropy, in order to determine which services have the lowest geographic localization.
