Much Ado at The High School Library

Firstly for those who don’t know about it, the library committee is a group of Form 1, 2 and 3 pupils who help Mrs King to do things in the library.  We set displays up, run weekly competitions and organise events. If you haven’t joined the committee and would like to, new members are still welcome. The new library head for this year is Nathan Hutchinson Edgar, the deputy head is Callum O’Dwyer and the secretary is Ellen Treacy McGee. The library committee is an enjoyable thing to join.  Finally we would like to say thank you to Mrs King for all she does. The library committee would not exist without her so thank you to her.

On and Off the Bookshelf - Junior Readers

Ever wondered what book to read next?  Well here is a list of the books that some of the pupils in our school are reading this month.  Perhaps, you may be inspired to take a book off the bookshelf too.  The List!

Enjoying European Language Week

Last week was European Language Week.  Ms Ennis and her team did an interactive assembly, while Naoise May (3J) read a poem by German poet, Heinrich Böll.   The Senior Chamber Group played Beethoven's 7th Symphony 2nd Movement (Allegretto), and Malika Kola Cahill (4BK) and Alex Felle (6DT) performed Schubert's "Trockne Blumen".
The library had a range of activities and decorations up for the occasion.  As well as the wide range of multi-cultural flag bunting, the library had a range of quizzes and magazines for students to enjoy.

Form 6 Halloween Trip to The Gaeltacht
During the Halloween mid-term break Form 6 pupils will be attending a water sports adventure centre (www.uisce.ie) which will be run exclusively through Irish. This will be extremely helpful as we become more fluent in our native language and, at the same time, will be most enjoyable.

Calling All Traditional Musicians!
Can you play ' The Lilting Banshee' or 'Si Bheag, Si Mhor'?  Do you play the fiddle, tin whistle, bodhrán, accordion, or any other traditional Irish musical instrument?  If you do, please contact  Ms Rothwell (Music Block) as soon as possible.

Drama- Backstage Preparations Begin

Backstage preparations are well underway for the production of this year's Form 5 Play, 'Blood Brothers'. Rehearsals take place every Tuesday and Friday, 4.00pm - 6.00pm, unless Mr Milofsky announces otherwise.  It is extremely important that all cast members attend these rehearsals, but should attendance be impossible, cast members are requested to inform Mr Milofsky in advance.

Alas, we must wait until the end of November until we can enjoy the finished production.  Good luck to all involved!  In the meantime, here is a little video  reminder of last year's performance, 'Bugsy Malone'.

HSD Model United Nations

Model United Nations is where students represent a country discussing global issues affecting the world today.  It’s a great way to make new friends and improve public speaking.  Last Saturday, the 26 September, 16 students from The High School alongside Ms. Wilson attended the annual TERMUN conference in Terenure College, representing Austria, Chile and Italy.  See more ...

This Week's High School Dublin Hockey Hopefuls

GIRLS' Hockey
On Wednesday the Senior XI girls played a friendly against Kilkenny College.  It was an exciting and fast game which led to a fair result, a draw, 3-3.  The girls played incredibly well despite our first league loss last Saturday.  Goals came from Saskia Bos and two from Mia Jennings.  Players of the match went to Katie Moore, Rosanne McCullough and Laura Motyer.

On Saturday at 10am the Senior Girls 1 XI played their 2nd league game v St Killians.
Final result was 7-0 with goals from Mia Jennings, Olivia Cunningham and Ellen Ridgeway.  Great bravery shown from our Junior players - Katie Moore and Laura Moyter - going in for an amazing tackle.  Man of the match was Olivia Cunningham.

This Week's High School Dublin Rugby Round-up

Senior XV Match Report
It was a mild, windy day and St Fintan's got off the mark first, with two penalty goals.  A great solo effort from David James Donnelly saw us score the first try of the match, with a great sideline conversion from Tim Dolan.  St Fintan's hit back with two tries before the half.  But the second half didn't go our way as we only scored one try by Jack O'Gorman supplied by a brilliant run from Cian McCausland.  Fintan's finished strongly with three late tries, winning 39-12.   Man of the match:  Cian McCausland.

Hockey NEWS: Congratulations to Emma Canning (6IW) who has been selected to represent The High School on the Leinster U18 hockey squad.  We extend best wishes for success to our pupil as she competes for team selection in the forthcoming inter-provincial competition at this age grade in October 2015.
