Why is this service needed?Improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health, and suicide prevention, is a key priority area in the Fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan. Close to 30% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people report having a diagnosed mental health condition and 30% report high or very high levels of psychological distress, which is nearly three times that reported by non-Indigenous Australians. Intentional self-harm was the leading cause of death from 2011-2015 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged between 15 and 34 years of age, and the rate of death due to self-harm is twice as high as the rate among non-Indigenous Australians. Services should be integrated to address the broader needs of individuals including mental health, suicide prevention, social and emotional wellbeing and alcohol and other drug disorders. The service model should focus on enhancing current service delivery, rather than developing a new service.
