Imitating my plumber, I squeezed into the tight spaces and used salty language—to no avail. After two and a half hours reading the instructions, assembling the fill valve mechanism and mounting it in the tank, every part I had touched was leaking! After considering whether to call my plumber, I soldiered on. It took starting over, correcting the pieces that I assembled backward and two additional hours to complete the repair. Over the years I’d received enough useful instruction from my plumber to solve basic plumbing tasks—things like guidance on the importance of using effective wrenches, how to tighten without stripping threads, and how “plumber’s tape” is for novices not DIY plumbers at my skill level. This was a start, but in order to solve these tasks efficiently and well I certainly needed more expert instruction as evidenced by my fill valve repair episode. Learning from masters, like my plumber, can save many hours or even years of trial and error. They have deep knowledge, and when they are also master teachers, know how to lead others on the path to mastery as well. With a bit of luck, I managed to get the job done, but I recognized that trial and error had made the endeavor harder and longer, with uncertain results. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERT GUIDANCE ENSURE BETTER RESULTSHow many times within the window of the New Year have we embarked on a similar DIY endeavor to learn and adopt new health enhancing practices? Beginning with enthusiasm and using ineffective tools, we pursue outdated methods for weight loss and stress management, quickly becoming discouraged by the same disappointing results as in past attempts. Typical of this season, many people are thinking about how they want to improve their health and well-being in the upcoming year. Advertisements and promotions portray this undertaking as simple and quick
regardless of the fact that data and experience prove otherwise. It doesn’t have to be this way. “We position ourselves for rich rewards when we take our time and focus in depth, when we trust that going through a process of months or years will bring us mastery,” writes George Leonard in Mastery. We’ve found this to be true as we practice together in the High Health Network. The High Health Network makes it easy for everyone to obtain the knowledge and expert guidance that improves results.
