Immunisation

Parents/carers are delaying child immunisations

A large number of parents/carers are forgoing or delaying National Immunisation Program Schedule vaccines due for their child as a consequence of the pandemic, according to recent data from the Royal Children’s Hospital Poll Report: Routine childhood vaccination: Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Summary:

    • One in five (20%) children aged 0-5 years have had a routine childhood vaccination delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • 41% of parents explain the reason for delay is due to concerns of catching COVID-19 at the general practice or council services, a further 17% were concerned about catching COVID-19 on the way to an appointment by public transport or a taxi service.
    • 19% of parents delayed vaccinations as their doctor or nurse was not offering vaccines due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Risks:

    • Children who have had their vaccination delayed have an increased risk of susceptibility to a preventable disease, which could be life-threatening.
    •  A likely increase in outbreaks of these preventable diseases when children return to child care centres.
    • Vulnerable populations, especially the elderly, in the community if herd immunity levels drop further.

It's critical that children due for their vaccinations attend their appointment with their GP or council services.

    General practices, please:

    • Use your recall and reminder systems to call parents to book immunisation appointments. Immunisation sessions are an essential service throughout the pandemic, including during Stage 4 restrictions.
    • Continue to provide immunisation services with adaptions to manage COVID-19 associated risks.
    • Refer to our list of local council immunisation providers.
    • Refer to billing Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) attendance items for immunisations.
    • Read Sharing Knowledge About Immunisation's (SKAI) website to navigate conversations with parents
