Junior Certificate Results

Last week pupils, parents, and teachers waited expectantly for the arrival of Junior Certificate results.  The excitement was palpable and was soon replaced with joy and relief.  The culmination of three years' hard work was not in vain and pupils spent the afternoon celebrating with a paintballing excursion kindly organised by the HSD Parents' Association.   Congratulations to our pupils who did wonderfully well in the examinations and who deserve to be very proud of themselves.  Well done too to the teachers and parents who helped our pupils every step of the way.

Say Hello to Our New Prefects

What a fine photograph of this year's Prefects, including Head Boy, Head Girl, and their deputies.  We wish them every success as they assume these highly-valued positions in the school community.  We know that they will do a wonderful job setting an excellent example for all at HSD.

A Glorious Gaisce Hike

Early on Sunday morning, a group of excited Form 4 pupils set off on the first Gaisce hike of the year.  The destination was beautiful Glendalough in County Wicklow.   There were many breathtaking views and plenty of good conversation which made a four-hour hike simply fly by.  We delighted in the views of the magestic glacial valleys:               fortunately we counted a Geography teacher in our company!  The weather was perfect for the occasion and everyone journeyed home in high spirits already looking forward to our next glorious Gaisce hike.

Assembly Music

We have some very talented soloists at The High School and last week we enjoyed a beautiful rendition of Le Rossignol by Vieuxtemps at Assembly.  What a wonderful way to start the day!

Simon Community Home Run

Forms are still available from Ms Hutchinson-Edgar in A22 for pupils who would like to participate in this year's Simon Community 'Home Run' taking place Saturday 7 October in the Phoenix Park.

Church of Ireland Board of Education service

The governors, staff, parents, pupils, and past pupils of The High School, together with representatives from minority faith secondary schools from across the country, will join Mr Richard Bruton, Minister for Education and Skills at a service of Choral Evensong to mark the opening of the academic year at St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin on Thursday 28 September at 3.00 pm.  The sermon will be delivered by Joanne O'Riordan.  All are most welcome to attend this service.

Rugby Triumph

A fantastic result was achieved by members of our Form 2 rugby team last Saturday who won by a margin of 56-12 against Terenure College.  A fine game of rugby was played by The High School side.

A Tablet Made of Clay

Hints of trigonometry on a 3,700 year old Babylonian tablet (clay, not digital)!  A recent article in the New York Times describes the studies being done on an ancient clay tablet
from Babylon (now Iraq).  The tablet contains what we know today as Pythagorean triples, numbers that work together in Pythagoras’ well-known Theorem about right-angled triangles; yet Pythagoras was not born until 1000 years later!  Two Australian mathematicians reckon the clay tablet was used to work out trigonometry in Babylonian times.
For more information look up the full article on the New York Times website.

Form 1 Rugby Blitz

The High School played Newpark Comprehensive School and Wilson's Hospital in a rugby blitz recently.  There were three High School teams in all.  Some of the games were very tight but some just slipped away from us.  We scored several great tries and pressurised the other teams.  We really enjoyed playing our first blitz for The High School and we look forward to the next match.
