Seventh NSW resident returns from overseas with measles in 2017
NSW Health is again urging people to watch for measles symptoms after a young adult who contracted the disease overseas spent time in Sydney Airport and the Marrickville area while infectious. The case was infectious while visiting the following locations between 28 February and 5 March: - Bangkok SCG stadium on 28 February
- Thai Airways flight TG475 from Bangkok Thailand, to Sydney Australia, arriving in Sydney on 2 March
- The Marrickville area during the day on 5 March, including having lunch at a local restaurant.
Anyone born during or since 1966 should have two doses of vaccine (at least four weeks apart). For young children, the measles vaccine is recommended at 12 months and again at 18 months of age. NSW Health offers free MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine through GPs for people born during or since 1966 with no records of having received two doses of MMR vaccine. It is safe to have the vaccine more than twice, so people who are unsure should be vaccinated. Ensure that patients planning to travel overseas are fully
vaccinated against measles before departure to reduce their risk of contracting measles and bringing the disease back to Australia. For more information see the NSW Health measles factsheet.
