Click here Vol 24 No 10 16 Nov 2018 Act of RemembranceThis week, The High School commemorated all those who died in conflict during the twentieth century in an Act of Remembrance. In particular, the service of at least 476 past pupils who volunteered during the First World War and Second World War (of whom a total of 99 were killed) was marked in a short ceremony held during Assembly. The Principal (together with the Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy, and Deputy Head Girl) represented The High School at the annual Act of Remembrance which was held at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Remembrance Sunday. You can learn more about past pupils of The High School who died during the First World War here. Science Week Art ProjectAs part of Science Week Form 2 Art pupils created portraits celebrating ground-breaking scientists through history. These projects were completed in Mr Hanan's Art class before half term. Each pupil was given a scientist to draw and create an etching of the image. The compositions had to include the person's hand holding an object associated with the relevant scientist, including Nicolas Copernicus, Albert Einstein, Jane Goodall, Thomas Edison, Stephen Hawking, and Nikola Tesla. We spent a long time planning, designing, and eventually printing these etchings. It was a very enjoyable project and we were all pleased with the outcome. The 'Famous Scientists Art Exhibition' is now on display in the Reception area at The High School . UCD Entrance ScholarshipsWe are delighted to have been advised by the President of UCD that a number of immediate past pupils from The High School have been awarded Entrance Scholarships in recognition of their high levels of performance in the Leaving Certificate examinations. The awards are made to first year students who have achieved 560 points or more in their Leaving Certificate examination. In 2018, Peter Lynch, Edward Meredith, Loris Nikolov, Saidhbhe O'Brien, Alexander O'Regan, and Dylan Walsh achieved this notable distinction and were awarded Entrance Scholarships. We offer these and all recent past pupils of The High School our warmest congratulations on their achievements and wish them every success in their academic careers. Gaisce Night HikeOn the 8 November a group of about 40 pupils from The High School took part in a hike as part of their Gaisce award. The group met in the school at 5.30 am and after ensuring that everyone had brought the right kit they set off towards the hill. The bus arrived at Ticknock about half an hour later and everyone began the walk. Hiking in the dark was a challenge for the Form 4 group, especially for those who hadn't done so before. The walk took about half an hour and involved some light rain throughout. There was some great views of Dublin city to be enjoyed when we reached the top and after a short break the glorious descent began. It was a wonderful experience and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. 3G Rugby PitchThe High School JCT were the first team to play a match on our new 3G pitch in a tough game against St Fintan's High School. Winger Christopher De Lacy scored the first try. This historic game marks a new departure for our school rugby teams who now have the opportunity to play and train in all weathers all year long. Poetry AloudThe regional heats of the 'Poetry Aloud' competition organised by Poetry Ireland were held in the National Library of Ireland on Thursday 25 October. The competition attracted over 1600 entries in three age categories - junior, intermediate, and senior. This year three pupils from The High School entered the competition. Each entrant had to learn one poem chosen by Poetry Ireland and one they chose themselves. The day was very enjoyable and we all were delighted when Arianna Gorman was chosen to go through to the next stage. We would like to thank Ms Wiggle and Ms Connolly for organising the entry. We wish Arianna every success in the semi finals of the competition. French BreakfastIn most French homes morning breakfast is a sweet affair with croissants or pain au chocolat, a choice of jams, honey and butter, and a hot beverage such as coffee or tea. Recently Form 2 pupils studying French enjoyed some experiential learning with a French breakfast of their own. Delicious! Dates for your Diary
