Sexual harassment in the workplace
At the last board meeting of the Law Council of Australia, Directors unanimously called on the Federal Government to amend the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth), to close gaps and ensure that victims of sexual harassment in the workplace can be protected with a comprehensive legislative framework that extends to judges, other statutory office holders and barristers. There was also unanimous endorsement of the Law Council’s long-standing call for the government to establish a Federal Judicial Commission. Read more.
China imposing security laws in Hong Kong
The Law Council is gravely concerned by reports that China’s top legislative body unanimously passed a sweeping new national security law, which has been implemented in Hong Kong. From the outset, the legislative process implemented by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC) has not been transparent and has bypassed the Hong Kong’s Legislative Council with no public consultation. Funding certainty for legal assistance services
The announcement of the commencement of the National Legal Assistance Partnership (NLAP) – a five-year funding agreement for the legal assistance sector – has been welcomed by the Law Council of Australia. Read more.
Equitable Briefing Policy - annual reports now due
The reporting portal for the Equitable Briefing Policy (EBP) is now open. Annual reports are to be submitted by 30 September 2020. The Law Council has also updated its Equitable Briefing Policy Reporting Template and Guidelines in response to feedback from previous reporting periods. For more information visit the EBP webpage.
