Who we are

Photograph of Kate Akerman, education officer

Hi I'm Kate Akerman, one of the Education Officers at the State Library of Western Australia. As a kid I travelled a lot and attended 5 different primary schools. My family settled in Perth to complete my secondary schooling. I remain eclectic in my interests and have had many careers, including biochemistry and making documentaries with the BBC.  I like to compare teaching with documentary production; communicating complex ideas, provoking discussion, while trying to be entertaining. I have enjoyed working with the Western Australian Museum and now working with fantastic teams and the collections at the State Library, where no two days are ever the same!

Workshop in focus: Then and now

Some things change and some stay the same.  The State Library has been collecting photographs for over 100 years and continues to do so. The workshop Then and now uses photos to inspire student discussion about the past and the present. Students create a timeline using photographs of Perth and make a vintage-style postcard to take home. The State Library pictorial collection is available online and is a great source for teachers and students exploring Western Australian stories.

For further information about this workshop, and to book, please complete a booking request form, phone (08) 9427 3202 or email your request to ed@slwa.wa.gov.au

Resource in focus: Historical panoramas

Take your kids on a tour of the 1900s.

The Historical Panoramas Project is a collaboration between the State Library of Western Australia and the Curtin University HIVE. The virtual tour explores historic settings in Perth and Fremantle and enables students to compare them with modern day counterparts. Take a journey through space and time.
