A Submarine in Oklahoma? The USS Batfish is a genuine WWII submarine located at War Memorial Park in Muskogee, OK. The Balao-class submarine served the United States Navy in various capacities from 1943 to 1969. It was named after the batfish, a ferocious West Indian fish that can be found in tropical waters at depths of 660-9,840 ft. The Batfish sank 15 Japanese vessels during WWII; most notably, in February 1945, it sank three Imperial Japanese Navy submarines in only 76 hours. After the war, the Batfish was retired and became a training vessel. The OK Maritime Advisory Board acquired ownership of the Batfish after receiving Congressional approval in November 1971. The Batfish was set at what is now known as the Muskogee War Memorial Park in April of 1973 and was unofficially opened to the public on Memorial Day weekend that year. ![]() The USS Batfish was lifted, moved, and damaged during the May 2019 floods and is currently closed until repairs are completed. GUY is part of the team, led by BKL, Inc., providing a design to secure and right the USS Batfish. GUY's scope of work includes survey, utility locating, and conceptual options for erosion repair and stabilization. ![]() Are you missing the sun? It's been a gloomy end to the first month of 2020. These cold, grey, dark days of winter can leave you feeling tired and hungry and can even cause a Vitamin D deficiency. Scientists theorize that the lack of sunlight in winter months affects your internal body clock, disrupting your mood, appetite, and sleep. To feel better, try exercising, meditating, and getting out in the sun for even a few minutes whenever it comes out. And cheer up: there are less than 50 days until spring! |
