Carbon Slayers &

The Ghost of Climate Change Past

On Halloween, our spooky, haunting imaginings are unearthed. Vampires and Frankensteins roam sidewalks as costume covers; ghouls and witches decorate our doors. What normally scares us is out in the open, and we make fun, play tricks and eat treats. We enjoy ourselves in the midst of the fearful. As a result, fear loses its power over us. We are above it.

In our most recent blog, Second Nature President, Tim Carter, responds to the UN report, which brought out into the open, once again, a haunting picture of what our earth faces in the midst of climate change. This is an opportunity to not be motivated by fear, but by our belief in humanity's ability to rise to the occasion with combined, cross-sector efforts until human-induced climate change is a ghost of the past and renewable options are the norm. Go ahead and call yourself a carbon-slayer in the spirit of this Halloween season and enjoy your hard work in confronting climate change; we are above this thing.

Announcing a Thrilling Summit Speaker Line-up

In the words of Michael Jackson, “creature creepin’ up behind; you’re out of time; ‘cause this is thriller” NEWS. And here it is: we’ve announced the beginnings of the 2019 Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit speaker line-up, and it’s looking wicked (in the Boston sense of the word, aka awesome). Check the list out. But contrary to the MJ lyric, you’re not out of time-- speaker proposals will now be considered until October 26th. We invite friends from all disciplines, backgrounds, and perspectives to submit proposals for next-level conversations, workshops, and concurrent sessions. Submit Proposal.

Best Duo Costume Goes to: CAP & Second Nature

Salt & Pepper, Tarzan & Jane, Ghostbuster and Marshmallow Man. When you find that perfect costume duo and impress everyone in the office, that is how we feel about our new partnership with Harvard Business School’s CAP team. Community Action Partners (CAP) launched their 2018-2019 consulting projects, and we look forward to working with them to explore new affiliate membership models and to evaluate new growth initiatives to magnify our climate action work in, and through, higher education.

Mad Scientists of MODs

Dr. Jekyll concocted a potion that made him maniacal Mr. Hyde. And Frankenstein’s curiosity created a monster. We popularize our fictional mad scientists for their bold experiments. The universities and colleges in the Climate Leadership Network have experimented with carbon reduction methods and renewable energy models, and many have achieved great strides of success. Our Marks of Distinction initiative celebrates when campuses reach key performance indicators like 50% carbon reduction and 100% renewable energy purchaser. View this year’s full array of recipients. Congrats and well done to these institutions, who unlike Halloween’s mad scientists, met success in their bold carbon neutral experiments, and have paved a way forward in climate action leadership.

When you have the perfect pumpkin pie recipe, why change it? Our renewed partnership with Siemens is the perfect combination for assisting campuses to achieve greater climate action. As the market leader for energy-efficient and environment-friendly buildings and infrastructures, Siemens is an invaluable fellow collaborator. Their recent white paper covers how educational institutions can move towards a more practical and affordable control of energy supply.

Welcome Eric!

Eric Howard is the new Director of Strategic Partnerships at Second Nature.  Based in Boston, he guides the development of dynamic partnerships, integrating them into our climate action programs. Read his bio. Eric’s favorite Halloween costume he ever rocked was a cod fisherman, with dried salt codfish on a line draped around his neck. That's dedication.

Have a Happy Halloween!

...We hope you enjoyed this Undead version of the Implementer. Stay above the spooky.
