September is an exciting month for cycling, with lots of events involving two-wheeled fun. There's Cycle to Work day, Pedal for Scotland and the the Tour of Britain, to list just a few. Cycling News and Events

Pedal for Scotland 

The popular charity event Pedal for Scotland takes place this year on Sunday 11th September. Cyclists can choose to ride the Classic Challenge of 46 miles or an epic 112 miles in the Big Belter. Good luck to everyone participating! For more information visit the Pedal For Scotland website.

Cycle to Work Day

Cycle to Work Day is a national event that aims to encourage everyone to take to two wheels and cycle to work for at least one day. It is celebrated this year on Wednesday 14th September. If you want to take part but haven't cycled in a while, please get in touch with us to discuss how we can help. 

Free Cycle Skills training

  • Are you fairly new to cycling?
  • Want to improve your confidence and skills?
  • Not sure how to navigate on cycling infrastructure?
  • If any of these apply Bike Town can help!

We offer free training and support to people living/working in Rutherglen/Cambuslang who are keen to improve their cycling skills. We offer a half day training session and follow-up support to help get you started.

Date:

  • Saturday 17th September, 10am-2pm

Improve your confidence and skills at one of the sessions and then we will help you to plan a route and arrange to accompany you to your chosen destination .

September Rides and Activities

Weekly adult guided rides

Our weekly Wednesday rides are ideal for new cyclists, people who haven't been on a bike for some time and anyone happy to cycle at a leisurely pace.

New participants are always welcome and we have loan bikes available for anyone living/working in Cambuslang or Rutherglen. Arrive at 9.30am if you wish to borrow a bike.

Rides are guided by our experienced and friendly ride leaders and the ride departs at 10am. Please note from 10th September the Wednsday ride leaves from our new location: Bike Town, Unit 5 Thomson Court, Bankhead Industrial Area, Rutherglen G73 2RR We stop midway for the very important cafe visit and aim to return by 1pm

Go Further Friday ride

If you want to increase your mileage and improve your stamina, come along to our monthly Go Further Friday ride, where we cycle a wee bit further and faster than our weekly Wednesday rides. We usually average a pace of about 10mph and cycle between 20 and 30 miles. 

  • Friday 23rd September, ride departs at 10am

WANTED: Bicycle Donations

  • Do you have any unwanted and neglected bicycles you can donate?
  • We accept bicycle donations in any condition and give them a new lease of life
  • Donated bicycles are refurbished for sale or salvaged to recycle their working parts

You can drop off your bike donation at Bike Town Unit 5 Thomson Court, Bankhead Industrial Area, Rutherglen G73 2RR on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10am and 2pm after 10th September.

In partnership with NHS Glasgow, we'll be collecting donation bikes from the New Victoria Hospital in Glasgow between 12 and 2pm on Wednesday 14th September. You'll find us in the car park.

Bike Shop in a Box - WE ARE MOVING on 10th September!

We are excited to announce that the Bike Town will be moving to new premises on Saturday the 10th September.

We're still moving things from the old base and settling in, so we'll wait a while before we have a launch party, look out for you special invite.

In the meantime we're doing our best to ensure it is business as usual from our new location: 

  • Reconditioned bikes for sale; children and adult sizes available
  • Affordable repairs and servicing
  • Skillful, experienced bike mechanics
  • Bike essentials for sale

Cycling Ambassadors

We're still recruiting for our Cycling Ambassador scheme and hope to organise an information session and training soon. We want to hear from you if:

  • You regularly commute by bicycle
  • You already offer mechanical assistance to cyclists in need or wish you had the skills to be able to do this 

Our Cycling Ambassadors will be trained and supported to promote cycling and provide help when needed. In return you'll get:

  • FREE bicycle maintenance training
  • FREE bicycle tools and sapres
  • FREE Cycle Ambassador Hi Viz
  • A warm glow when you help out a fellow cyclist

Healthy n Happy AGM

Bike Town is just one of the initiatives of Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust, utilising cycling to contribute to achieving the vision of Cambuslang and Rutherglen becoming the healthiest and happiest places to live in Scotland.  

Every year the Healthy n Happy AGM provides a platform to showcase the work of the whole organisation and we warmly invite everyone in the local community to attend. In addition to the usual AGM business, there will be a chance to find out more about the different service areas of Healthy n Happy, enjoy a buffet lunch and hear about the amazing work of the past year in a fun and entertaining presentation.
