Foundation Day - 150th Anniversary

This week we celebrated 150 years since The High School was officially established by the Governors of the Schools Founded by Erasmus Smith, Esquire on 1st October 1870.

We celebrated the 150th anniversary of our foundation by decorating the school with balloons and bunting, distributing a commemorative medal to every pupil, and providing HSD 150 catering for all pupils and staff.

We also observed the significance of Foundation Day 2020 by broadcasting a service of Choral Evensong to the whole school community at 5.30 pm.

The Most Revd Dr Michael Jackson, Archbishop of Dublin and Bishop of Glendalough, Primate of Ireland and Metropolitan presided and preached (by kind permission of The Very Revd Dr William Morton, Dean and Ordinary) in the presence of the Chapter of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.  The music was directed by the Organist and Master of the Choristers, Mr Stuart Nicholson, and sung by the Lay Vicars Choral of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.

We hope that you were able to join us marking this important milestone in our shared history.  A recording of the broadcast is available to watch here.

European Languages Day

This week was European Languages Day at The High School.  Pupils marked the occasion by celebrating European culture.  Kayla Kennedy played an excerpt from Bach Sonata No. 1 in G minor - Siciliano, while Aidan MacNeill read a poem called 'Liebes-Lied' by German poet Rilke.  Thomas Boucher introduced and read a page of 'Le Petit Nicolas' in French and Alex Gordon read an extract from "El principe Detronado" from Miguel Delibes in Spanish.  Well done to all involved.
