Prompt of the Week

From Daphne Palasi Andreades, Friday Night Salon Artist

Think of a place you know well, whether real or imagined. Write about that place using ONLY sensory details: what are the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and so forth, that immediately come to mind? Jot down these details, being as specific as possible. Be sure to go beyond merely "positive" pretty descriptions.

Join Queens native and O. Henry Prize recipient, Daphne Palasi Andreades, as she discusses her debut novel, Brown Girls, and how to draw from what we intimately know—our lived experiences, hometown, and family—while combining our imagination to fill in the blanks.

PAIR FEATURE

"A Friend, Editor & Mentor All In One"

Lilura Christopher and India Choquette

Lilura and India have been paired together for two years, during which time they have grown as writers and friends.

"India is a friend, editor, and mentor all wrapped up in one. I'm actually very shy and secretive with my work, but I doubt that was the impression India got from our first meeting. Opening up to her about my work comes easy."  —Lilura Christopher, mentee
