Girls Write Now Hosts Statewide Literary Convening

Building Community & Awareness for Writing

An estimated 70% of the country’s literary arts organizations are located in New York State, with the largest concentration based in the city. The leaders of these groups share the responsibility to represent literature for the nation, and last week they gathered to find inspiration at Girls Write Now. This statewide convening included the National Book Foundation, PEN America, Cave Canem, and more. Mentees Madeline Hutchinson and Christiane Calixte opened the event with original poetry, and interviewed keynote speaker and poet Kimiko Hahn.

A Night of Storytelling for Change

At Storytelling for Change: A National Voter Registration Day Event, participants told their voter stories and responded to a prompt about writing as a form of resistance. Student Ambassadors Chloe Lee, Zuzanna Wasiluk and Amira Elrington-Edwards shared what they're doing to get people across the country ready to vote. Plus, mentor Anne Hellman White won Election Trivia and went home with an Isabel Allende Barbie, the newest addition in the Inspiring Women Series.
