#MissedTheMark

October 23, 2020

Dear Industry Partner,

Since the pandemic began TIANS has been meeting with the provincial government, urging appropriate supports to stabilize the tourism sector.

Tourism Nova Scotia is forecasting that in 2020 Nova Scotia tourism revenues will fall 65% to $900 million, down from $2.6 billion in 2019. With sharp declines in revenues, and high fixed costs, many operators are experiencing extreme financial hardship. Despite this, operators have taken extraordinary measures to ensure public health and safety, and to meet the needs of customers and visitors with confidence.

On Friday, October 16th, the provincial government announced a $50 million Tourism Sector Loan Guarantee Program, which will serve less than 5% of the industry. While we appreciate the need for businesses to access capital, the limitations on this program for many large, mid-size and smaller operators, who do not meet the threshold, is extremely unfair to the sector. We need to design a broad range of supports  that leverage federal initiatives and address the unique conditions for Nova Scotia.

We need your voice to let elected officials in your community know that the government has missed the mark. We need a recovery plan and a rebuilding plan.

Here is what you can do:

  • Write your elected community member today (customize pre-populated letter)
  • Set up meetings in your community
  • Sign up to TIANS Tourism Strong COVID-19 Facebook Discussion
  • Spread the word on your own Social Media

Stay Tourism Strong.
