Our recent event on Anxiety Disorders and PTSD in Primary Care which was held on 27 June is now live on our website and available for viewing. Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Adrian Keller presents on what you need to know in regards to anxiety disorders and how to manage them. This is a great refresher for those who attended this event, and an opportunity to learn about this topic for those who missed it. ![]() NEW Cold Chain Toolkit for NSW Immunisation Providers NSW Health has published a Cold Chain Toolkit and Safe Vaccine Storage Checklist to support immunisation providers with the changes to the National vaccine storage guidelines ‘Strive for 5, 3rd edition’. Reminder: NSW Health cold chain online learning module due by 31 July To continue to receive government-funded vaccines, at least one staff member of each practice must successfully complete the NSW Health Vaccine Storage and Cold Chain Management online learning module by 31 July 2019. Trans Clinics Care for GPs Survey Shortly after a leading gender-affirming Endocrinologist suddenly ceased practising, ACON, The Gender Centre and Dr Michelle Guttman-Jones (Alice Street Doctors, Newtown) collaborated to host a physician Trans Clinical Care Roundtable. A public list of gender-affirming physicians is now being under development and you are invited to register your details by completing this survey. 150,000 reasons to be cured of hep C Over 71,000 people in Australia have been cured of hepatitis C since new, highly effective medications became widely accessible in 2016. However it is estimated at least 150,000 people nation-wide are yet to seek treatment and cure. July 28 is World Hepatitis Day and anyone living with hepatitis C is encouraged to take advantage of the new medications. They can be prescribed by any general practitioner, and cure is usually achieved within 8 or 12 weeks, with minimal or no side-effects. These new oral pill treatments have a cure rate of 95 per cent. Quality Improvement PIP – are you ready? The introduction of the new Quality Improvement Practice Incentives Program from 1 August 2019 provides a significant opportunity for accredited practices in Australia to be involved in a range of quality improvement programs, particularly around the management of chronic conditions, making use of their own practice data. Antenatal pertussis vaccination recommendations The National Health and Medical Research Council has provided updated recommendations on the range of timing of pertussis vaccination for pregnant women, which has been expanded from 28-32 weeks to 20-32 weeks gestation. New app for children's mental health Child360 is a new app from Emerging Minds which gives parents a simple, trustworthy, pro-active tool for taking stock of their children’s social and emotional wellbeing. Pen CS webinars: PIP QI for general practice This webinar will demonstrate how to work with your CAT Plus tools in the context of PIP QI. PEN CS is working on adding more reports to CAT Plus showing the new improvement measures in a new module, but CAT Plus already provides the ideal tools for quality improvement activities. In this webinar some QI examples will be shown as well as an overview of the ten improvement measures and what can be done currently. Tenancy laws give medical practitioners ability to help victims of domestic violence Medical practitioners can help their patients escape a domestic violence situation in a rented home by making a domestic violence declaration. The declaration will enable a tenant to end their lease immediately, without penalty. To provide a declaration, the medical practitioner must have consulted with the victim of domestic violence in the course of their professional practice. The victim can be the tenant or the tenant’s dependent child. Diagnosis and Management of Low Back Pain CPD event and optional focus group Join us for a CPD event on 30 July as researchers and clinician researchers from The University of Sydney Institute of Musculoskeletal Health will provide a best evidence update on the management of low back pain in primary care.
There will also be a 1-hour optional focus group, to help develop communication tools for GPs to use with patients who are considering an imaging test for musculoskeletal pain. Please note you do not have to participate in the focus groups to attend the CPD event. Those who participate in the focus group will be reimbursed for their time. Mend – a new app helping people experiencing homelessness Many Australians want to help homelessness people and don’t know how, while the charities and services assisting people experiencing homeless face a difficult task of identifying where they are. The new app MEND give the community the opportunity to help people who are experiencing homelessness by taking action instead of simply walking by. The app can be filled in by the general public, then a report is sent to local services with a request to provide care to this individual, while also analysing in real-time a more accurate picture of what is happening for rough sleepers and couch surfers in NSW. As of 17 July, we have updated our event registration process. Users can now register for events using two of the three identifiers - email address, mobile number or member number. This means that if you do not remember your member number, you can still register with the two other identifiers. You can also enter your mobile number to receive an SMS with your member number. Each event will be identified as a member-only event or open event. If an event is for members only, you will be prompted to either become a member or pay the event fee.
