2020 IFT Student Food Packaging Development Competition Winners
FPD is excited to announce winners of the first IFT Student Food Packaging Division Competition. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the competitors and organizers for their participation and support.
First Place: Inkjet-Printed “All-In-One” Intelligent Packaging Label, Xiaoyu Luo, University of Guelph, Canada.
Xiaoyu is currently a Food Science doctoral candidate, with the research interest in food packaging and product development. He received his M.Sc. in Food Science from McGill University in 2017 and B.Sc. degree Major in Food Science Minor in Chemistry, from the University of British Columbia, Canada in 2015.
Second Place: Packaging Solution: Antioxidant and proteinaceous edible films for human colonists on Mars, SuriyaPrakaash Lakshmi Balasubramaniam and Avinash Singh Patel, University of Maine, ME.
SuriyaPrakaash is currently pursuing doctoral degree in Food and Nutrition Sciences. His research focus is on biodegradable packaging, where he is trying to use naturally found biodegradable and renewable materials such as nanocellulose to prepare a packaging material that has potential to replace synthetic fibers and prolong the shelf life of foods.
Avinash is a final year Ph.D. student in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department under the supervision of Dr. Mary Ellen Camire. His work is focused on designing and developing of Nano/Micro biopolymers for food applications. His approach is to utilize surface chemistry and structural design principles to understand the interfacial interaction behavior of the developed Nano/Micro biopolymers and food components to create unique and meaningful nutraceutical and functional foods. He is currently working on adsorption of medium-chain fatty acid i.e., lauric acid to the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and investigating the effect of different processing and storage conditions on the physicochemical stability of the nutraceutical loaded O/W emulsion including static in-vitro gastrointestinal tract (GIT) study.
