Click here Image: Hahei Explorer Experience this magical pace in a different wayWith the news that the Cathedral Cove walkways will not be reinstated for summer 2023-24, we must ensure visitors get the message that they can still experience the beauty and grandeur of this iconic place by taking a boat or kayak tour. When the rāhui is lifted by Ngāti Hei the beach itself will open for water craft landing to give visitors access through the marine reserve, but rockfalls in the cathedral arch and along the adjacent cliffs pose an ongoing risk to the safety of visitors on the beach. Experiencing Cathedral Cove on a boat or kayak tour has always been high on the list of iconic activities in Hauraki Coromandel. Guided tours take in other extraordinary volcanic forms along the rugged coastline and the clear waters are teeming with wildlife. The tours add much to a visit to this place which has achieved iconic status. Visitors gain insight into the geology that formed the cove, its history and stories, plus the wildlife that makes it home here. This makes for a rich and memorable experience, especially for those who might have been challenged to access via the now closed walkway and stairs. We have a number of boat and kayak tours operating out of Whitianga and Hahei which have been taking visitors on tours, stopping to view Cathedral Cove as part of the trip. When Ngāti Hei lifts its rāhui over the area, DOC has safety signs in place and operators have robust plans to assure visitor safety, people will be able to land on the beach. But we must all make it very clear there is still risk associated with going ashore at the cove and ensure visitors are properly informed. The best way to visit is with one of our experienced local operators and guides, with passengers remaining in the boat on most tours. We have developed a resource to highlight the options and make sure visitors have the outstanding experience they seek visiting Cathedral Cove this summer. Download the poster here For more the latest from DOC on the risks to visitors on the beach: Please continue to provide your feedback and insights which we will share with DOC, Ngāti Hei and TCDC. We agree this is a priority project and a massive opportunity to develop a regenerative visitor experience where tourism gives more than it takes. Nga mihi |
