The mid-year “Where We Are Today” report was created to support dialogue with First Nations communities at the fall regional caucus sessions and to provide clear communication on key topics of interest related to the FNHA's work.

The First Nations Health Authority envisions Healthy, Self-Determining and Vibrant BC First Nations Children, Families and Communities playing an active role in decision-making regarding their personal and collective wellness. In line with Directive 1 - Community-Driven, Nation-Based, the FNHA is encouraging First Nations to create their own health event or initiative!

The 2015-16 theme is around new year's resolutions. What is your community or individual resolution this year? The FNHA wants Winter Wellness events to encourage and sustain wellness in individuals, families, and communities throughout the year.

On November 3 we’re asking you to take the Tobacco Timeout Challenge and quit tobacco for 24hrs. Making the decision to try is the first step on the journey to becoming tobacco-free.

You don’t have to quit forever – just 24 hrs.  And you don’t have to do this on your own – there will be hundreds of other people joining with you from across BC.

Like learning anything new, learning to be smoke-free takes practice and takes time. The more times you try to quit – the more you break the cycle of routine – the more likely you are to succeed.

A few weeks ago in Hartley Bay, Krystal Dundas wore a huge smile as her daughter Kadence, who is hard of hearing, had her first speech-language therapy appointment through telehealth. Thanks to the easy accessibility that telehealth provides, this appointment is the first of many Kadence will have as she grows and develops - without needing to leave her community.

​On Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Tuckkwiowhum Heritage Interpretive Village, Boston Bar First Nation the FNHA Fraser-Salish Team attended a Cultural Awareness Workshop on Death Protocol. The workshop was an amazing learning opportunity on how to blend western practices with the cultural ceremonies and traditions of the Coast Salish people. A series of workshops are underway to help strengthen partnerships between Fraser-Salish communities and service providers.

LAICHWILTACH TERRITORY (Campbell River, BC) – The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and Kwakiutl District Council (KDC) have partnered to host an innovative mental health and wellness event to focus on healing through distinct First Nations and Aboriginal health perspectives. The "Together on Our Journey Towards Integration and Healing in Mental Health and Addictions: Conference 2015" took place October 19-20, 2015 on the traditional territory of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in Campbell River, BC and brought together over 400 participants to learn and share their stories.

Did you know that November 2-6, 2015 has been declared BC Falls and Injury Prevention week? One in three First Nations Elders will fall this year. Did you also know for older people living in BC:

• Falls are the number one cause of injury related deaths
• A hospitalization occurs every 10 minutes because of a fall
• Falls account for 40 per cent of moves into a nursing home

There is much we can do to reduce these statistics starting with raising awareness and encouraging:

• Regular medication reviews
• Annual vision checks
• A safer home (i.e. less clutter)
• Exercise

This Aboriginal Domestic Violence funding is intended to respond to the needs of Aboriginal communities in BC in relation to domestic violence. It is intended to provide funding to Aboriginal communities to address this issue while reflecting community needs, and incorporating culturally-safe and responsive methods and traditions.

The closing date for BCAAFC Aboriginal Domestic Violence funding is October 30th, 2015.
