World Dyslexia Day 2018On Thursday October 4th, we’ll shine a spotlight on World Dyslexia Day as the Coventry Library Stirling is lit up in red Dyslexia Australia estimates 10% of Australians face reading and learning difficulties with dyslexia, a statistic that has our libraries providing dyslexia friendly books for young readers. Dyslexia-friendly titles feature cream-coloured pages, an easier to read font, short chapters, less text per page and wide line spacing. There are dyslexia-friendly books available at every branch and for all reading levels. Look for the light bulb label on the spine or search on the Library Catalogue using the term ‘dyslexia friendly’. We also have a large range of talking books, read-along kits and eAudiobooks which can help children develop a love of stories. Our eBook platforms provide dyslexia-friendly display options for both child and adult, providing you with the opportunity to personalise your screen with different font-size, colour and spacing. Staff can assist with accessing both physical and eResources or specific advice on your child’s reading needs can be obtained by contacting Youth Collections Officer, Zoe Lewis at zlewis@ahc.sa.gov.au . Indigenous Literacy Once again we are raising funds for ILF, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, in its aim to close Australia’s indigenous literacy gap. Each year ILF purchases thousands of books to be delivered to schools, early learning centres and women’s centres in Australia’s remote communities. To assist ILF, we will - in tandem with our Baby Bounce, Action Rhymes and Storytime programs - hold a children’s book sale from 10am on Tuesday 4th, Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th September. All proceeds will be donated to the ILF. All welcome, whether there for programs or just to support a fantastic cause. Have you tried our online resources? Beamafilm - Stream the latest film titles. Have your Adelaide Hills library card handy and check out these great resources! Looking for LGBTQI Materials? Our LGBTQI resources range across collections and are not always easy to locate. To assist in finding what’s available, all new materials can be found on our library catalogue by using LGBTQ+ as a search term. We’re retrospectively adding this search term to materials already held on our shelves. Australian Reading Hour On Thursday, September 20, stop what you’re doing for one hour and pick up a book. We want Australians to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading. Take the time to learn, grow, escape and relax. In children, reading has been shown to help with identity formation, setting them up for success in the future. In adults, reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea. Not sure what to read? Our staff are happy to help you find something whether it’s a book, audiobook or e-book. Do you need a JP?
