Click here UDA Weekly UpdateMay 28, 2017Lyonhearted Kickball TournamentWhen: June 3 from 8am-4pm Where: Christian High School, 2100 Greenfield Drive, El Cajon This June, the Lyonhearted Foundation will host a kickball fundraiser honoring Austin in 6th grade. The foundation aims to provide assistance to families faced with pediatric cancer, support research, and increase awareness through community involvement. Donations raised from the event will go directly to Austin’s family and to pediatric brain cancer research. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or obtaining sponsorships from others, please visit the Lyonhearted Foundation’s website for more information. Library Books are DueDesign Thinking EventThursday, June 1 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Design thinking is a popular buzzword these days, with companies from IBM to GE using this approach to develop innovative products and reinvigorate their operations. Design thinking, or human-centered design, is playing an increasingly important role in K-12 education. It is about focusing on the needs of people to ensure that the correct problem is being solved in the most effective way. With critical thinking skills becoming increasingly important in a knowledge-based economy, many educators see design thinking as a way to tap into students' passions while enabling them to solve problems in an ever-more diverse and interconnected world. Middle School Bonfire SocialLast week, middle school students and families gathered together for a lovely evening of games, s’mores, and great company at Vacation Isle Park. Fifth GradeFifth graders are in the midst of an engineering design challenge! They students are designing and building unique packaging that will surround raw eggs as they are dropped from a drone in June. Sixth GradeLast week, 6th grade attended Astrocamp in Idyllwild to learn about physical science and astronomy, build and launch rockets, and participate in a ropes courses and zipline adventure while strengthening their leadership skills. STEAMStudents in kindergarten collectively explored the important role of observations and predictions as scientists. They placed a raw egg in vinegar and tracked the changes that occurred over an 9 day period. Third grade students are working with the Qualcomm Thinkabit Lab while learning the basics of computer programming. They will be creating simple robots and using servo motors with Arduino. After-School KarateCongratulations to our UDA Tang Soo Do Karate students on their first Martial Arts tournament in Eastlake, Chula Vista! Tyler Reardon, Noah Reardon, Maya Iglesias, and Henry Austin each presented outstanding performances in their respective categories. Tyler Reardon took a 1st place in the "Forms" category and 2nd place in the "Team Form" competition. In the Little Dragons category, Maya Iglesias, Henry Austin, and Noah Reardon performed with other 4-7 year olds from Arizona, California, and several states in Mexico, earning a beautiful award medal for their great performances as well. The event is named the USA/Mexico Friendship Tournament and it is sponsored annually by Tang Soo Do Karate Institute. IdeateOur high school students and staff settled into their new space last week. They are looking forward to showcasing their spring exhibition, “Transform,” on Monday, June 5 from 6:30-7:30 in their new home at 232 West Ash Street. A Message from Network ParentsCoffee Social/General Network Meeting Please join us in the Hive after the Stellar Student Awards Ceremony for some coffee and conversation. We will be making announcements about our upcoming Summer Kick-Off event and new volunteer committees that will be forming next year. This is a great time to chat with other parents and UDA administration, as well as stay informed about what is happening in our school community. We hope to see you there! Summer Kick-Off Event & Ball Drop Please join us for an end-of-year picnic with UDA staff and families. This event is FREE and open to everyone! We hope you and your family can come celebrate the school year with us. We will also have fundraising opportunities for UDA at the picnic. Bid tickets (for over 40 amazing prizes) and 50/50 drawing balls will be available for purchase before and after school on May 31. Any amount of tickets bought over 20 are $1 each! UDA Talent ShowDate: Wednesday, May 31 Time: K-3 from 8:30-9:45am/4th-8th from 10:00-10:45am Place: Patio/Hive Students performing in the talent show may arrive to school in costume provided that it does not distract the student in class. All costumes must be school appropriate. Please make sure all props and instruments are on hand or set up in the “off stage” area of the Hive before the show begins. The line up will be posted the day of the talent show. We hope you’ll join us for this amazing showcase of student talent! UDA Transitional Kindergarten ApplicationsIf you or someone you know is interested in enrolling a child in UDA’s Transitional Kindergarten program for the 2017-18 school year, please complete an online application through SchoolMint by Thursday, June 1. The TK lottery will be held on June 2. This program will only be open to students who will reach the age of five between September 2 and December 2 of the 17-18 school year. Online Uniform OrdersUniforms that were purchased from UDA’s online store by April 14 will be delivered to the front office on May 31. Middle School Uniform DonationsIf your child in Middle School has outgrown his/her black or khaki uniform bottoms, please consider donating them to UDA to be used as loaners. Similarly, if your child borrowed loaner uniform pants, skirts, or shorts, please return them to the front office once they have been cleaned. Reporting an Absence ReminderIf your child needs to remain at home due to illness, family emergency, funeral, legal matter, or religious holiday, UDA needs to receive notification from a parent/guardian by 9am on the day of in order to excuse the absence. In order to report the absence, you may either call the school (619-788-4668) and select option 2 to leave a voice message, or send an email to attendance@urbansd.com.
