Help us save Fray's Farm Meadows from the threat of HS2

Fray's Farm Meadows is one of our most valuable nature reserves and yet an access road for the proposed HS2 rail link between London and Birmingham is set to cut across the reserve. The reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), one of only 37 in the entire Greater London region, and supports what is probably the largest remaining sedge fen in London; a rare wet grazing meadow that is home to species such as water vole, snipe and slow-worm.

We have petitioned the Government in defence of Frays Farm Meadows, and hope that our supporters will also respond to the consultation by 27th November. It only takes five minutes – see wildlondon.org.uk/HS2-Frays-Farm-Meadows

Give someone special the gift of nature

Winter can be a hard time for London’s wildlife, but there’s one easy thing you can do right now to help. Give your friends, relatives and colleagues a special gift membership to London Wildlife Trust. We stand up for nature across the whole of Greater London, and work with 46 other Wildlife Trusts to ensure that wildlife and wild spaces are protected, valued and enjoyed across all of the UK. With over 800,000 members we are a powerful voice for nature. Gift subscriptions start from £30.00 and you can always donate more if you wish. Each gift membership comes with a free copy of 152 Things To Do and a special, signed card.

See wildlondon.org.uk/gift-membership or speak to Ryan on 020 7803 4272.

Do something heroic for hedgehogs on #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday. Hedgehog image by Tom Marshall

This #GivingTuesday we will be raising funds to save and sustain the last hedehogs in London. Following the #BlackFriday sales and shopping boom of #CyberMonday, why not come together on Tuesday 1st December and show the world why it is good to give?

Ten years ago there were over 3 million hedgehogs snuffling in hedgerows throughout the UK, but research indicates that numbers have declined by a staggering 30%, with records suggesting they have virtually disappeared from many parts of London.

London Wildlife Trust knows that creating a landscape with healthy, joined-up wildlife habitats is the essential first step in helping our local hedgehogs recover. But we cannot do it alone. You can do something now to stop this iconic creature from vanishing forever - see: wildlondon.org.uk/givingtuesday

Every Child Wild - connecting children with nature

We know that children are happier, healthier and more creative when they are connected to the natural world - and we believe every child in the UK should have access to nature. The Wildlife Trusts commissioned a poll that revealed:

  • 91% of parents think that having access to nature and wildlife is important for children in general

  • 78% were concerned that children don't spend enough time interacting with nature and wildlife

  • Over a quarter (27%) of children aged 8-15 had never played outside by themselves, beyond their house or garden – and 37% hadn’t done this in the past six months.

  • 37% of children had never seen a hedgehog in the UK

  • Only 24% of children said their school had an indoor nature display area like a nature table

The Wildlife Trusts reach over 300,000 children each year through our work with schools, but there are 800,000 children in every school year. That’s why we need your help to reach and inspire these children. To see how you can help just visit wildlifetrusts.org/EveryChildWild
