Salamanca Pedestrian Improvements

Traffic and project update

Upcoming road and traffic changes to Salamanca Precinct

Gladstone Street
Gladstone Street from Castray Esplanade to Salamanca Place remains closed to southbound vehicles until Monday 6 July as the City's construction crews finalise the road connection.

From Monday 6 July to Friday 17 July, Gladstone Street, between Salamanca Place and Castray Esplanade, will be closed to all traffic as retractable bollards are installed to support the operation of the Salamanca Market.

The City continues to liaise with the State Government over the re-opening of Castray Esplanade, and we are hopeful that Castray Esplanade will re-open prior to the closure of Gladstone Street. If this is the case, southbound traffic will be re-directed along Castray into Salamanca Place.

The project team has scheduled these works during the school holidays to minimise impacts on road users.

Salamanca Place
Salamanca Place at Montpelier Retreat intersection, will be closed to westbound vehicles until 10 July as the stormwater works are finalised and construction of new kerbing, street light installation and paver re-installation at the front of Retro Cafe occurs.

General project update

Stormwater main construction
The recent rainfall deluge has been excellent for testing the new stormwater infrastructure. The stormwater pipe is now live and has been successfully conveying the large amount of water delivered by the heavens above. There's nothing like a new pipe with lots of stormwater flowing through it to make the City's engineers smile!

Pedestrian Improvements
Despite the rainfall, the pedestrian improvement project is still on track for completion in November.

The two dedicated construction crews are working furiously and the site is really starting to take shape. We thought we would give you a sneak peak on what's behind the construction fencing!

In the images below you can see the new curved wall encircling the Abel Tasman monument. The wall is architecturally designed to provide a sitting space for the community, perhaps to enjoy a lunch break, a coffee, or to simply enjoy the site of the new pedestrian plaza - more on that in a minute! The wall is not quite finished yet and we can't wait to share with you the final product as soon as the finishing touches have been applied.

Construction of the pedestrian plaza is well and truly underway and the project team have wonderful visions of how this space will be used by the community. Currently, the area has been graded and the sub-base laid, in preparation for final surfacing treatments. There's not much to see just yet but we have included some photos of progress so far.
