FNHA Calling for Wellness Champions at Winter Events

The First Nations Health Authority will award grants again this year for events and challenges aimed at encouraging conscious acts of health and wellness during the coldest months.

The 2019 theme is Everyone is a Wellness Champion – Time to Live It! The focus is on participants leading by example to encourage holistic approaches to wellness.

The grants are open to B.C. First Nations communities, organizations, schools, and agencies that deliver direct health services to First Nations who may also contribute resources to the events.

Applications are due Nov. 23, 2018.

Protect yourself, your loved ones, co-workers and clients by getting the flu shot!

A message from FNHA Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Evan Adams, about the flu and the flu shot!

Flu season is November-April, and, as the FNHA's Chief Medical Officer, I'd like to remind all Indigenous people in BC that the best way to protect yourself and others is by getting your flu shot! I get my flu shot every year and I encourage my loved ones to do so as well. Flu vaccines help our bodies do what they do naturally — build immunity to fight illness.

Please be aware that while the flu is unpleasant for most of us, it can severely affect at-risk individuals such as the elderly, babies, small children, pregnant women, and those with health challenges. So by getting our flu shots, we are playing an important part in preventing the flu from spreading to these groups.

Flu shots are free in BC for all First Nations and Aboriginal people.

November is National Osteoporosis Month

Bone health is an important part of overall health

A message from Dr. Unjali Malhotra, Medical Director, Women's Health, FNHA Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO)

Keeping our bones healthy is an often-overlooked but very important part of our overall health and wellness. Fortunately, there are a number of things we can do to positively impact our bone health and prevent low bone mass and the deterioration of bone tissue – also known as osteoporosis. And many of the things that help prevent bone loss are good for our overall wellness.

Sober for October Wrap-Up Message

A message from Dr. Evan Adams, Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Shannon McDonald, Deputy Chief Medical Officer

"Congratulations to everyone for working on your personal health and wellness in this important way. We're so pleased with the hundreds of positive comments, posts and messages from participants, who are encouraging other community members by either sharing their successes this month or their years of sobriety so far. Some say they're feeling more clear-headed and energetic than they have in a long time, and some say they're believing this will be a turning-point!

We're also pleased that this challenge has increased our comfort level in talking about alcohol. Don't worry if you didn't do as well as you wanted to – every bit of work toward wellness helps."

Aboriginal Health and Community Administration Program

Indigenous communities have many opportunities and challenges in addressing the needs of a growing population, the legacy of colonization and the urgent need for improved health and education. The administration needs in First Nations communities and Indigenous health organizations directly relate to the transfer of health programs and services from Health Canada to control by First Nations communities.
