Vice-Chancellor launches UOW College Hong Kong
 

The Community College of City University (CCCU) has been officially renamed UOW College Hong Kong.

UOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings CBE, who officiated at an event in Hong Kong on Saturday 18 November, said the launch of UOW College Hong Kong reinforced UOW’s commitment to bringing its outstanding university experience to Hong Kong.

UOW College Hong Kong has operated under the CCCU name for more than 10 years and is widely recognised as Hong Kong’s premier college, providing for more than 6000 students annually.

UOW shines in student completion and graduate employment
 

UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, welcomed the release of the Australian national statistics ranking the University of Wollongong fourth in New South Wales and seventh in Australia for student completion rates.

With 75.2% of its students who commenced bachelor degrees in 2010 having completed their degree by 2015, UOW ranked well compared to other non-metropolitan institutions and ahead of several universities located in Australia’s major capital cities, including some Group of 8 universities.

 

The University of Wollongong has long had a laser sharp focus on offering our students a personalised and supportive learning experience and in developing exceptional graduates who are highly sought after in the workplace.

Subject success for UOW Engineering and Technology
 

Ranking success has continued for UOW, with the University jumping more than 80 places in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 by subject: Engineering and Technology in the engineering category.

 

The ranking places the UOW in the top six in Australia and number 96 in the world for engineering. UOW was also ranked in the top 300 worldwide for computer science.

UOW’S MBA PROGRAM AMONG AUSTRALIA’S TOP 8
 

UOW has been ranked seventh in Australia for its global Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

 

The QS World University Rankings for Global MBA (2018), released 29 November, reveal the best business schools in the world for getting a job or becoming an entrepreneur.

 

UOW was ranked in the top 200 in the world and in the top 21-60 across the Asia, Australia and New Zealand category.

 

UOW’s Master of Science (Project Management) was also ranked 77 globally in the Master of Management category; one of only two Australian programs in the top 100.

Finance student honoured to receive Bradman Foundation Scholarship
 

A student from the University of Wollongong’s Sydney Business School is “elated” to have been honoured with a scholarship bearing the name of one of his heroes: Sir Donald Bradman.

 

Abhishek Nandigam, who is studying a Masters of Applied Finance, received the 2018 UOW Bradman Foundation Scholarship during a ceremony at Sydney Cricket Ground in November.

 

The annual scholarship is presented to an undergraduate or postgraduate student from India – male or female – who demonstrates a strong performance both in the classroom and on the cricket field, the ultimate all-rounder.

PhD students respond to China’s Belt and Road project
 

As part of a long-standing collaboration, six UOW PhD students participated in a symposium at Wuhan University, China in November.

Michelle Cahill, Indra Alverdian, Peter Gibson, Xu Qinqing, Tian Zhuoling and Feng Zhuqin, together with Professor Wenche Ommundsen and Dr Sharon Quah, presented papers on their research and discussed the reception of the Belt and Road initiative in Australia with staff and postgrads from Wuhan.

Hosted by Wuhan’s Australian Studies Centre, the group were also given a tour of the city’s historical monuments. During the visit, Professor Ommundsen was presented with a Guest Professorship for her ongoing support for the collaboration.

 
 
 
 
STRENGTHENING UOW’S LINKS IN CHINA
 

In a recent trip to China, UOW staff visited a number of esteemed Chinese Universities in an effort to enhance and expand existing relationships as well as develop new partnerships with identified institutions.

 

Among the universities visited were twinning partners, Central China Normal University, Beijing Jiaotong University and Zhengzhou University, all of which have strong ties with UOW’s Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences.

 

While in the region, staff also met with the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and Shanghai University to explore new partnership opportunities for research and student mobility. 

 

Beihang University also hosted UOW delegates who discussed expanding the current agreement to include further research and mobility opportunities.
