World Heart Day 2018: Improving Indigenous people's heart health

A Message from Dr. Jeff Reading, BC First Nations Health Authority Chair in Heart Health & Wellness at St. Paul’s Hospital and Professor, Simon Fraser University

September 29 is World Heart Day – a day to think and talk about how to promote heart health and help prevent the many heart diseases afflicting people across the world, including Indigenous peoples.

Indigenous people’s heart health can be improved, and we need to think about the impacts on women and men, infants, children, youth, adults and Elders to target changes that make sense for our heart-health journeys.

FNHA survey collects the attitudes of BC First Nations on cannabis, opioids and cancer screening

Encourage survey participation among your Indigenous networks – especially 18 to 25 year olds!

The FNHA is very interested in the views and beliefs of First Nations and Aboriginal people in BC as it responds to the opioid crisis, changes to federal cannabis policy, and works towards improving cancer screening rates for First Nations and Aboriginal people in BC.

The FNHA is conducting the Health Attitudes and Beliefs Survey to better understand the perspectives of BC First Nations on these topics—so that the FNHA can improve how it delivers health programs, services, and shares public health information with clients.

Menopause Awareness Month 2018

A message from Dr. Unjali Malhotra, FNHA Medical Officer, Women's Health

As a women's health specialist, I always enjoy meeting up with colleagues who have the same goal – to share the latest and greatest information about how women can live and age in our best health! I recently spent a wonderful week at the International Menopause Society meeting as a Canadian delegate, and want to share with you some of what we discussed about menopause.

Most of us know that menopause is a transition for women and marks a time of change, but at this meeting we discussed how we could also see it as representative of a lifelong journey of physical, mental and spiritual health.

September 10 was World Suicide Prevention Day

A Message from Dr. Nel Wieman, Senior Medical Officer, Mental Health & Wellness

September 10 was World Suicide Prevention Day, a time to talk openly about this very important – indeed, life-or-death – topic. "Working Together to Prevent Suicide," The International Association for Suicide Prevention's theme for 2018, works well for First Nations communities in BC and aligns with the First Nations Health Authority's Perspective on Health and Wellness. As does the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention's recommended strategy of promoting hope and resiliency as central to preventing suicide.

Wildfires loss grief and the spirit of the land

A blog from Patricia Vickers, FNHA Director of Mental Wellness Clinical Services

The recent wildfires in British Columbia have been devastating for some as they’ve never experienced loss in their lives before such as losing their homes and belongings that can never be replaced.  For others it is the devastation of their traditional territories where they gathered berries, hunted, trapped and fulfilled traditional ceremonial rites and practices.

The FNHA and the Health Arts Research Centre partner to support wildfire evacuees in Prince George

On Saturday, Aug. 25, students and staff associated with the Health Arts Research Centre (HARC) partnered with the FNHA to host a fun, family-friendly creative experience for wildfire evacuees in Prince George.

Families were given the supplies and the space to create their own unique t-shirt; the results were truly an inspiration.

Nicole Cross, FNHA's Regional Executive Director for the Northern Region shared, "Many of the evacuee individuals stayed at the evacuation site to lend a helping hand in Prince George. A big thank you to the Heath Arts Research Centre for their support in this meaningful work."
