Here’s your source for the latest news from Health Quality Ontario. This month, we’ve posted drafts of our first three Quality Standards and welcome your feedback. We've also released a recommendation to continue publicly funding skin tests for allergic rhinitis, and shared the call for project proposals from Adopting Research to Improve Care (ARTIC) Program.

It’s widely acknowledged that mental health care services in Ontario face challenges related to access, transitions and equity. So when Health Quality Ontario decided to launch its new Quality Standards program, it made sense to start there. Now open for comment: Newly posted drafts of our first three Quality Standards that focus on Major Depression, Schizophrenia
and Behavioural Symptoms of Dementia. Comprised of a concise set of evidence-based statements, each standard articulates what high quality care looks like for a particular condition or service area.

Our Insights into Quality Improvement series continues with observations from the long-term care sector’s 2015/16 Quality Improvement Plans. Homes are strengthening cross-sector partnerships and focusing on reducing falls, managing incontinence and improving residents’ care experiences, among other things.

A warm welcome to Dr. David M. Kaplan, our new Provincial Clinical Lead, Primary Care. In this role, he serves as chair of our Primary Care Quality Advisory Committee and a member of our Provincial Quality implementation Committee, which work together to promote quality improvement in Ontario.

Nearly a quarter of Canadians are affected by allergic rhinitis (hay fever). We’ve approved a recommendation from the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee to continue publicly funding skin testing for hay fever, given the reasonable accuracy of the test.

Improving & Driving Excellence Across Sectors (IDEAS) recently won the 2016 Ted Freedman Award for Innovation in Education, which recognizes programs that enable education in health services. IDEAS is an Ontario-wide initiative to enhance health system performance by increasing quality improvement, leadership and change management.

The Adopting Research to Improve Care (ARTIC) Program announced its 2016/17 Call for Proposals for the next great project to spread integrated care across Ontario, with maximum available funding of $1 million. ARTIC seeks projects that improve integration of care across care settings, and is keenly interested in those that focus on seniors with complex co-morbid conditions or people affected by mental health and/or addictions.
Deadline for submission: July 4, 2016.

The Canadian Mental Health Association hosted #GetLoud earlier this month, its campaign for Mental Health Week. Here’s one infographic from Taking Stock, our recent report on the quality of Ontario's metal health and addictions services. It shows perceived barriers to care, as reported by respondents with unmet or partially met needs in Ontario.
