CamGlen Bike Town October 2015 Newsletter

Summer might be over but before winter approaches Bike Town have a whole host of autumn activities for you to get your wheels into.

We have moved...

Our Bike Shop in a Box has moved to 39 Downiebrae Rd, G73 1PW. Don't worry we are still open for business as usual for all of your bike repairs and servicing needs. 

Opening hours:

Wednesdays 10am-2pm
Saturdays 10am-2pm

*NEW* Bike breakfasts, teas and commuter Bike Trains

Support for new and regular bicycle commuters. Bike Town will be visiting three different locations providing free breakfast or tea for cyclists and safety checks for your bicycle from Dr Bike.

Get aboard the Bike Train in October

Our commuter bike trains are running between Rutherglen and the Squiggly Bridge in Glasgow city centre. Open to both experienced and new cycling commuters, it's safer to travel together, so come along, meet the conductor and get on board the Bike Train. The ride is between 3.5 and 4.5 miles long, depending on the route and the pace is steady. Feel free to join us for all or part of the way.

Dates:

Thursday 15th Oct, 7.30-9.30am, Aspire Building car park, King Street, Rutherglen. Commuter bike train departs for Glasgow city centre (Squiggly Bridge) at 8.00am

Thursday 22nd Oct, 4.30-6.30pm, Overtoun Park. Commuter bike train from Glasgow city centre departs Squiggly Bridge at 5.15pm

Thursday 29th Oct, 7.30-9.30am, Glasgow Rd, near King St. Commuter bike train to Glasgow city centre (Squiggly Bridge), departs at 8.15am.

Cycle Maintenance is back

After popular demand, we are hosting an autumn series of bicycle maintenance workshops.  Booking in advance is essential, places are limited so please get in touch with us at biketown@healthynhappy.org.uk

Dates:

Monday 12th October 6-9pm - Bicycle Maintenance level one - FULL

Monday 26th October 6-9pm - Bicycle Maintenance level two

Venue: Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Church Hall, Chapel St, Rutherglen, G73 1JQ

Course Content:

Bicycle Maintenance level one: The essentials - roadside repairs and quick fixes

Bicycle Maintenance level two: Brakes and gears - replacing cables and adjusting

Bicycle Maintenance level three: Wheels - stripping hubs plus trueing wheels and replacing spokes

  • Please bring your own bike with you as you'll be working on it.
  • Clean bikes are easier to work on, give it a clean before you bring it.
  • If you know the essentials already you don't need to come to all three workshops.

Guided Rides

Family-Friendly Guided Ride

Join us for  October's  'easy' graded cycle ride, suitable for families with child cyclists, less confident cyclists and cyclists who want to cycle with a group at a leisurely pace.  Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday 24th October

Meet at 10am. Departs from our Bike Shop in a Box. The ride will include time for a rest stop, so please bring supplies or money for cake/cuppa/food.

Cycle Skills Guided Ride

Looking to improve your on-road cycling skills even with the dark nights approaching? Join us for evening cycle skills guided rides.

Date:

Monday 19th October

Departs 6.30pm from our Bike Shop in a Box

Wednesday Rides

Our  popular weekly adult guided rides continue every Wednesday. Meet at our Bike Shop in a Box at 9.30am if you wish to borrow a bike and arrive by 10am if you are bringing your own.

  • One ride a month includes a cycle skills development session
  • Build up your confidence on a bike
  • Meet other cyclists
  • Free loan bikes available if you live or work in G72 or G73 postcodes

Go Further Fridays

Are you feeling confident and fitter to go further on your bike? Our Go Further Fridays are a chance to cycle further and a little bit faster. 

Our next ride is Friday 16th October. Meet at our Bike Shop in a Box at 9.30am if you wish to borrow a bike and arrive by 10am if you are bringing your own. We aim to return by 3pm and don't worry we still include time for a rest stop with coffee and cake.

All CamGlen Bike Town cycling events are open to people living or working in Cambuslang and Rutherglen. To book a place on any of these activities or for more information email biketown@healthynhappy.org.uk or phone the office on 0141 646 0123 and ask for Mel or Jim.

Number 18

Official Launch

You may already be aware of the fantastic work of Healthy n Happy, of which Bike Town is a part. Most recent is the refurbishment of the former church hall into a brand new community hub for Cambuslang and Rutherglen, named Number 18.

Number 18 opened its doors to the public last Friday, with our AGM as the first event.

This was followed by an open doors event and then in the evening the launch party for Camglen Radio

Bike Town have a radio show on the community focus slot every Wednesday at 1pm. If you'd like to join us on the show to talk about what cycling means to you, get in touch with us at biketown@healthynhappy.org.uk You can listen to Camglen Radio on 107.9FM or online.

Get your voice heard at Paris climate talks

Keep Scotland Beautiful is a major funder of Bike Town's activities through their Climate ChalIenge Fund. In the run up to the Paris 2015 Climate Change Negotiations Keep Scotland Beautiful is providing opportunities for your voice to be heard, and resources and information on simple actions you can take to help tackle climate change.
