Tip #7 Is your writing flabby or lean?In her fantastic book Stylish Academic Writing, Professor Helen Sword makes the case that academic writing should be engaging and beautifully crafted. Paste your writing into her online test, The Writer’s Diet, and get immediate feedback. The test diagnoses the ‘fitness’ of your writing as somewhere between lean and heart attack territory, based for example, on your choices of verbs and prepositions and how often you write ‘that’ and ‘there’.
