Australia's LGBTIQA+ Community Media Organisation

CEO Update -09/2020

Dear JOYster!

What a journey it has been for us all, (especially those in Victoria) over the past few months.  JOY has had the absolute privilege to play an important role in keeping us all connected, informed and entertained during this unprecedented time, thanks to your support.

The team at JOY did not hesitate to embrace this time, with lots of work being done on our on air sound, our new services and our preparation for relocation to the Pride Centre.  Whilst our sponsorship and other income streams have been hit hard by COVID-19 (like so many other organisations) we keep our eye on the future, knowing we will bounce back, stronger than ever.

I am excited to share our latest news with you all, and wish to thank you for your support and commitment to keeping JOY, a vibrant, successful community media organisation.

Ange Barry

Latest Community Radio Ratings Report

Our ratings are in for the second half of 2019 for the McNair Yellow Squares Survey (leading market research agency in Australia), and I am excited to share that during this period JOY grew our average weekly FM and DAB+ audience by 47,000 (or 37%), indicating a growing loyalty amongst our listeners.  We now have on average, 173,000 listeners each week.

Support JOY on GiveOUT Day!

This GiveOUT day, Friday 16th of October,  we are seeking donations for a very special project.  We are asking for support to upskill a network of people in regional, rural and remote communities enabling them to share their stories through all JOY platforms.  This project will broaden our content offering by giving voices to our rainbow families and friends located outside the Melbourne metropolitan area.

This content will be shared across our program grid, podcasting, social media and website services, taking us another step closer to building a more inclusive Australia.

Help us make this exciting new project a reality!

Save the date for the JOY Annual General Meeting (AGM), that is scheduled for Sunday 29 November at 3pm.

JOY Nation comes to life!

For many months, we have been working on developing our organisational plan to present JOY as a multimedia community organisation and service provider, to the broader community.  We refer to this internally as our JOY Nation strategy.

This work has included reviewing or designing and developing the various services that JOY provides (or will provide) to our community and beyond. This work also includes the evolving imagery of JOY appearing across our website, socials and internal spaces.

We have grouped and articulated our outward facing services as follows:

  • JOY 94.9 Radio - On air, streaming and DAB+
  • JOY TV - Streamed via JOY.ORG.AU, Facebook and YouTube
  • JOY Podcasts - Mix of show and dedicated podcasting
  • JOY Files - An online repository of information, articles and papers relevant to our community
  • JOY News - On air, streaming and video (to come)
  • JOY Academy - Online and face to face education - Broadcasting, Podcasting, Social Inclusion in the Workplace and Masterclasses.
  • JOY Gigs - Live (when possible) and online - Gig hosting
  • JOY Services - Sponsorship (On air, on TV, website, in-app, at events) - Talent (MCing, voice overs, narrations) - Podcasting (Designing, narrating or recording and editing of podcasts for clients) - Membership (Current offering plus revised Business and Organisations).

You will see changes to JOY’s website in the coming weeks and months to reflect this exciting new chapter in our journey, and please do feel free to share the availability of these services through your network – together we will build JOY’s sustainability as Australia’s only LGBTIQA+ community media organisation!

Move to the Victorian Pride Centre

Whilst our move to the Pride Centre has been delayed due to COVID-19, work has continued at Bourke Street in planning and prototyping our new office and studio layout.

Our new space at the VPC will include an open and welcoming office plan plus five studios, with a mix of video and audio facilities.  We will most likely being the fit out onsite in December and aim to conduct our first live broadcast from the Pride Centre in Mid-February.

This is how the Pride Centre is progressing: https://pridecentre.org.au/
