Probably the best value white wine available in the whole of France. No Images? Click here Dear wine lover, "The finish is ethereal, probably the best value white wine available in the whole of France." So says wine writer Michel Bettane, of France's top wine publication La Revue du vin de France. He's referring to the 2016 Pinot Blanc from Alsace producer Meyer-Fonne, whose wines we have followed and supported for some years. Winemaker Félix Meyer today produces some of the best wines in Alsace. From his base in Katzenthal, he produces concentrated, pure and detailed wines totally reflective of their varied terroirs. The 2016 Pinot Blanc, even though it is an entry-level wine, is a standout this year and we highly recommend it. It is from 80 year old vines (hence the term 'vieilles vignes' or old vines). The wine is full, dry and creamy with almond and a hint of apple and spice. Delicious and moreish, this is a good wine to pair with lighter dishes and anything with cheese. Meyer-Fonne's winemaking is very traditional, since most of the investments have been made in the low-yielding vineyards, with top old-vines parcels in the best sites, high density plantings and the vitalization of the soils. No synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides are used. When you think of the colossal amount of white wine produced in France each year - five times as much as all wine made in Australia - the accolade from Michel Bettane that this is the best value white in France, is one sure to attract wine lovers and bargain hunters alike. The 2016 Meyer-Fonne Pinot Blanc is available to purchase here. Cheers, Sarah Fuller |
