Hi there.

I hope you've had a fantastic Christmas and New Year break. I'm certainly raring to go in 2019!

I've been reflecting on a couple of things that I learned last year, from a point of view of coaching and also my own training.

Thing I Learned 1: Genetics are under-reported, under-publicised and are an important factor in training.

I've been able to do pull ups since I was a child and I ran a sub 45 min 10k fairly easily without much training but I still can't back squat 140kg and my snatch is laughable. The fact that I prefer snatching and squatting to running is a bit of a p*sser but, hey, such is life!

Take Away: As long as you are working hard and working smart, don't get too disheartened if things seem to come easier to other people. Also, don't judge others by your ability. What seems easy to you might not be for them and it's not always through lack of effort. Whether your a Flexible Freda, Speedy Sid, Strong Sally or Intense Ian, embrace your genetics and work with them.

Thing I Learned 2: Hunger is manageable!

I no longer get "hangry". I just don't! Why? I've learned to manage my hunger. I have done a few extended fasts where I don't eat breakfast until late in the day. On several occasions I extended the fast until 5-6pm and I found that, although I did feel ready to eat, I wasn't "hangry" and I actually felt quite energetic. I read a post by a bodybuilder who said that he does a 48 hour fast occasionally to remind himself what hunger actually feels like. I haven't done this but I can see some merit and logic in this.

Disclaimer 1: I'm not special or holier than thou! I used to get sooo hangry. This is the bloke who punched the rear-view mirror off the windscreen because I missed the chip shop my 2 minutes. (Disclaimer 1b - In my defence I was a callow 18 year old but, yes, I was a d*ckhe*d!)

Disclaimer 2: The "fast" wasn't part of an overall fasting approach - I just hadn't eaten for 19 hours. Fasting isn't magic and it doesn't do anything other than restrict the time period in which you eat so, in theory, it restricts the window of opportunity for calorie consumption (yes it's easy to eat 5000 calories in 2 hours so you still need a level of sense and restraint). I don't particularly like using the term fasting because there has been so much BS talked about it over the past couple of years but it's apt in this situation.
