Open Cage Aquaculture Operation at Lake Wolsey Should Be ClosedThe Georgian Bay Association is actively urging the Ontario government to close the open cage fish farm in Lake Wolsey, part of the North Channel of Lake Huron, because it poses a public health hazard to both humans and animals and pollutes the waters. Potential to Create a Larger Municipality on the Bay's CoastThe Ontario provincial government launched a review of 82 municipalities to achieve efficiencies and effectiveness. This could lead to municipal realignment. GBA sees the potential for the creation of a coastal municipality. Visit our GBA website for regular updates. Funding for Flare Disposal Program ConfirmedExpired flares? Transport Canada has restored funding for Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) and Canadian Industries Limited (CIL) to restart the Expired Flare Recycling and Education Program. Read more here to find out where you can safely dispose of your expired flares. American Professors Examine Great Lakes Water Levels DynamicsAre high water levels the new norm? Read this article to see what experts are saying about the rising water conditions on our Great Lakes. Weekly Water Level UpdatesPersistent wet conditions and high outflows have continued to contribute to exceptionally high lake levels. The water levels for all of the Great Lakes are above their highest monthly average record for June. Check out our GBA website for weekly updates. Excessive WakesPlease remember that higher water levels can make boat wakes even more problematic for cottagers. Read more about excessive wakes here. Help a Turtle Cross the RoadNature Conservancy of Canada is asking motorists to watch out for turtles on the highways throughout the summer. Check out their video on how to safely help turtles navigate the roads. Remember, always take a brake to help our amphibian friends – they really appreciate it! Fire. Away.According to the MNRF, 90% of all wildfires that start within three km of our communities are attributed to human activity. As part of the GBA fire study, we compiled a list of tips to help avoid starting fires outside. There’s also a list for fighting fires inside the cottage. We suggest you print them both and post them somewhere for all to see. Also read the article Hot Tips on Responding to Fires for ideas on how best to prepare your household in the event of a fire. We also suggest that associations review the article if they are formulating or updating their association fire response plan.
