This month we begin the one-year countdown to our 9th World Summit on Arts and Culture, which is scheduled to take place in Stockholm, Sweden from 31 May-3 June 2022, cohosted by the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA) and the Swedish Arts Council. The Summit will address the theme of Safeguarding Artistic Freedom and will bring together leading policy makers, researchers, managers and practitioners from the arts, culture and related sectors from around the world to explore artistic freedom as a fundamental pillar of cultural policy; consider the conditions for its existence, including our rights and responsibilities; and examine how we can – and why we should – safeguard it.

Following the model adopted for the 8th World Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, IFACCA and the Swedish Arts Council will work with an expert International Programme Advisory Committee (IPAC) to develop a world-class programme that explores safeguarding artistic freedom from different angles and includes a diverse range of lived experiences and perspectives. We are very pleased to announce that our IPAC for the 9th World Summit includes:

• IPAC Chair, Mr Olu Alake (United Kingdom), an internationally renowned leader with a strong commitment to helping generate positive social change, who has designed and delivered major programmes and cultural policy initiatives for creative sector and youth-oriented organisations; and who will soon take up the role of CEO at The Peel Institute. Mr Alake also served as a an IPAC Member for the 8th World Summit in 2019.
   
• Mr Brook Andrew (Wiradjuri/Celtic, Australia), an artist, scholar and curator, who is driven by the collisions of intertwined narratives, often emerging from the effects of post- colonialism. He holds academic positions at universities in Australia and the UK; and was the Artistic Director of NIRIN, the groundbreaking First Nations and artist-led 22nd Biennale of Sydney in 2020.
   
• Mr Alfons Karabuda (Sweden), an accomplished composer with more than 30 years’ experience in the music industry, who is a member of the cultural committee of the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO and has served as an expert in artistic rights to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
   
• Ms Pamela Lopez (Chile), a theatre maker, researcher and the Director of Programming and Audiences at Gabriela Mistral Cultural Centre (GAM) – a performing arts and music centre that generates direct encounters between artists and diverse audiences with a strong commitment to social justice– located in Santiago, Chile.
   
• Mr Farai Mpfunya (Zimbabwe), the co-founding Executive Director of the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust, a not-for-profit organisation that drives active social transformation by working with communities, investing in innovative and sustainable creative sector capacities, and mainstreaming culture in sustainable development.
   
• Ms Anupama Sekhar (India), an arts manager who specialises in facilitating international cultural cooperation, both North-South and South-South. Currently, she is a Board Member of ArtsEquator, an arts media company that promotes Southeast Asian regional arts practice; and is the Director of the Culture Department at the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).
   
• Ms Farida Shaheed (Pakistan), the Executive Director of Shirkat Gah-Women’s Resource Centre in Pakistan and inaugural United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights (2009-2015), who has worked for more than 25 years to promote and protect cultural rights and support the rights of marginalised people, including women and socio-economic, religious and ethnic minorities.

We currently plan to host the Summit as an in-person first programme for delegates from countries worldwide. However, in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will monitor global developments and may adjust these plans, where required. Registration is due to open in late 2021 and we will continue to provide updates to our friends in the international community via the World Summit website (artsummit.org), ACORNS and our social channels Facebook and Twitter #artsummitsweden.

IFACCA News

On Friday 21 May, Executive Director Magdalena Moreno Mujica participated in the high-level event on culture and sustainable development co-hosted by the United Nations General Assembly and UNESCO to mark the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. Representing the Federation and its members, Ms Moreno presented in the session Achieving Culture’s Transformative Potential to Accelerate the Decade of Action on policy measures to protect the cultural and creative sectors during the pandemic and unleash their transformative potential; and on possible funding models to support the creative and cultural sectors as a driver of sustainable development. The event was live broadcast and is available to view online via UN Web TV, in two parts (view part one; view part two, which includes Ms Moreno’s presentation).

The Secretariat welcomes to the team Ms Sarah Bond as its Project Manager for the 9th World Summit on Arts and Culture. Sarah is an established cultural leader who has delivered multi-disciplinary projects and has extensive experience working internationally. In 2018, Sarah launched Ho Ho Projects, a consulting agency that specialises in project management, with a focus on arts, research, mentoring, curating, international logistics, policy development and financial management.

Este mes empezamos oficialmente la cuenta atrás para nuestra 9ª Cumbre Mundial de las Artes y la Cultura, cuya celebración está prevista los días 31 de mayo a 3 de junio de 2022 en Estocolmo, Suecia, coorganizada por la Federación Internacional de Consejos de Artes y Agencias Culturales (IFACCA) y el Consejo de las Artes de Suecia. El tema de la Cumbre es la Salvaguarda de la Libertad Artística y reunirá a las y los principales responsables de políticas públicas, investigadores(as), gestores(as) y profesionales de las artes, la cultura y sectores relacionados de todo el mundo para analizar la libertad artística como pilar fundamental de la política cultural, evaluar las condiciones de su existencia, incluidos nuestros derechos y responsabilidades, y examinar cómo, y por qué, debemos salvaguardarla.

Siguiendo el modelo adoptado en la 8ª Cumbre Mundial en Kuala Lumpur, Malasia, IFACCA y el Consejo de las Artes de Suecia trabajarán con un Comité Experto Asesor Internacional del Programa (IPAC) para desarrollar un programa de nivel internacional que analice la salvaguarda de la libertad artística desde distintos ángulos e incluya una gama diversa de perspectivas y vivencias. Nos alegra enormemente poder anunciar que el IPAC para la 9ª Cumbre Mundial está formado por:

• Presidente del IPAC, Sr. Olu Alake (Reino Unido), líder estratégico de renombre internacional con un fuerte compromiso por generar cambios sociales en positivo que ha diseñado e implementado grandes programas e iniciativas en política cultural para el sector creativo y las entidades de trabajo con la juventud, y que pronto asumirá la dirección general del Instituto Peel. El Sr. Alake ya fue miembro del IPAC para la 8ª Cumbre Mundial en 2019.
   
• Sr. Brook Andrew (wiradjuri/celta, Australia), artista, académico y curador, especialista en el choque de las narrativas entrelazadas que surgen a menudo de los efectos del poscolonialismo. • Sra Anupama Sekhar (India), gestora cultural especializada en facilitar la cooperación cultural internacional Norte-Sur y Sur-Sur. Actualmente, es miembro de la Junta Directiva de ArtsEquator, una empresa de medios artísticos que promueve la práctica cultural en la región del Sudeste Asiático y directora del Departamento de Cultura de la Fundación Asia-Europa (ASEF)
   
• Sra Farida Shaheed (Pakistán), directora ejecutiva del Centro de Recursos para Mujeres Shirkat Gah en Pakistán y primera relatora especial de las Naciones Unidas en la esfera de los derechos culturales (2009-2015), ha trabajado durante más de 25 años por la promoción y la protección de los derechos culturales fomentando políticas y proyectos que apoyan los derechos de personas marginalizadas, como las mujeres y minorías socioeconómicas, religiosas y étnicas.

El pasado viernes 21 de mayo, nuestra directora ejecutiva Magdalena Moreno Mujica participó en un evento de alto nivel sobre cultura y desarrollo sostenible coorganizado por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas y la UNESCO para celebrar el Día Mundial de la Diversidad Cultural por el Diálogo y el Desarrollo. Representando a la Federación y a sus miembros, la Sra. Moreno participó en la sesión Ejercer el potencial transformador de la cultura para acelerar la Década de Acción, sobre las medidas y políticas públicas de protección de los sectores cultural y creativo durante la pandemia y de fomento de su potencial transformador, y sobre los posibles modelos de financiación para apoyar a ambos sectores como motores del desarrollo sostenible. El evento se transmitió en directo y se puede seguir en la Web TV de la ONU, en dos partes (primera parte y segunda parte, con la intervención de la Sra. Moreno).

Damos la bienvenida al Secretariado a Sarah Bond, en calidad de responsable de proyecto de la 9ª Cumbre Mundial de las Artes y la Cultura. Sara es una líder cultural de larga trayectoria que ha realizado proyectos multidisciplinarios y tiene una extensa experiencia en el trabajo internacional. En 2018, Sarah lanzó Ho Ho Projects, una agencia de consultoría especializada en la gestión de proyectos artísticos, de investigación, mentorazgo, curadoría, logística internacional, desarrollo de políticas y gestión económica.
