My Health Record Newsletter Update for GPs & Medical Specialists - May Edition
(Please share this resource with your colleagues)
New My Health Record (MHR) education and adoption activity to educate healthcare providers and consumers - Healthcare providers will be receiving packs in the mail this month with the latest MHR information and includes consumer brochures, posters, privacy and other fact sheets to display within their practice, pharmacy or clinic. These materials were researched and created in consultation with healthcare providers and include the benefits of MHR and how consumers can access and set access controls in their record.
- A digital advertising campaign will run to end of June 2019, encouraging Australians to have conversations with their doctors and other healthcare providers to start using and viewing their MHR within the clinical setting. The advertising also promotes training and resources for healthcare providers in using MHR. Some of the advertising includes 30-second videos and posters in 2,858 healthcare locations – GP waiting rooms, hospital, pathology, radiology and pharmacy locations. This activity will run across regional radio, digital advertising (social media and Google), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander radio and press, and will be translated in up to 7 languages (Arabic, Italian, Greek, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Korean) across press and digital. The Agency will also promote the MHR through digital
posters and self-service terminal screensavers at all Medicare and Centrelink locations from June 2019 onwards.
- Stakeholders can order or download new material via the print on demand portal here.

Better connections: Your health, your say
The Australian Digital Health Agency is facilitating a national conversation to develop a blueprint for a more modern, digitally connected health system.
The Better Connections: Your health, your say conversation aims to capture the expectations and priorities of a better-connected healthcare system. The outcome of these consultations will be a set of national standards that will provide a roadmap to industry partners and government for the future development and implementation of digital health technologies and system connectivity.
Healthcare providers and consumers are invited to complete a survey to have to have their say on what you want, need and expect from a modern, interconnected healthcare system that is focussed on improving the health and wellbeing for all.
For further information and to access the survey, please visit: https://conversation.digitalhealth.gov.au/have-your-say
Digital health for healthcare providers on the move The below resources will assist mobile healthcare providers in understanding digital health tools that can assist them in providing care on the go. This may include providers working in multiple locations or conducting home or aged care facility visits. Clinical software
A clinical information system / software can assist you in managing your patient information. A cloud-based solution may be beneficial for using on the go and allows you to work on a mobile device such as a tablet when you are away from your primary clinic. You could also use a desktop version or remote back to your clinic. If you already have software your current software/IT provider may be able to suggest options for accessing your clinical information when you are out and about.
Secure Messaging
Secure Messaging allows for an efficient, safe and secure point-to-point mechanism to communicate with other healthcare providers. Speak to your clinical software supplier or secure messaging supplier to discuss options.
My Health Record
My Health Record enables improved decision support and continuity of care and can be accessed via two options: - Provider Portal: The Provider Portal is a view-only portal for those without conformant software. The Portal can be accessed via PRODA on your laptop or tablet.
- Conformant Clinical Software: Conformant clinical software enables you to not only view but also upload to My Health Record. If you provide healthcare services for another organisation, their clinic may have conformant software. View-only access may be available via some Secure Messaging clinical software products.
Telehealth
Telehealth is the delivery of health-related services and information via telecommunications technologies. Telehealth assists to overcome geographic and time barriers in the provision of healthcare. Have you considered providing healthcare over the phone or videoconference?
For further information, speak to your IT Service Provider, software vendor, PHN, the Australian Digital Health Agency or your professional body.
Medical Objects is now MHR conformant Medical Objects has updated their product to now include the ability to access MHR through software. Medical Objects is available for free for healthcare providers to receive secure message delivery (SMD) via their web portal. This represents a recent opportunity for vendors who are not currently conformant to be able to implement a provider portal view from their software.

My Health Record 101 – Demonstration Webinars CESPHN has produced short video webinars on how to view, upload and share Shared Health Summaries using Best Practice, Medical Director and Genie. These are now available under our section ‘Resources for GPs’ found on this page of our website. Shared Health Summary vs Event Summary Factsheet CESPHN has put together an interactive factsheet outlining what a shared health summary is, what an event summary is, the difference between the two, and when to create and upload these documents. Clinical software summary sheets A range of new and updated clinical software summary sheets have been released and are available to download on the My Health Record website..
Influenza season
There is great opportunity for GPs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services and pharmacies to initiate a conversation about the patient’s My Health Record upon the provision of flu vaccinations, particularly now that 9 in 10 Australians have one. GP practices and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services providers can upload a Shared Health Summary or an Event Summary for the immunisation record to the patient’s My Health Record. A comparison between the two can be found here: https://www.myhealthrecord.gov.au/shared-health-summaries-versus-event-summaries Vaccination information should also be recorded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) as per your usual practice process, including for pharmacies. New regulations which came into effect recently in January 2019 requires all vaccines administered by the pharmacist to be reported to the AIR. AIR data may also be subsequently uploaded through to MHR via Medicare if the patient has permitted this under their settings. Some clinicians have reported that finding vaccination information within a MHR is actually easier than searching for it in AIR. This is partly because information uploaded to the MHR occurs in real time, whereas information uploaded to AIR will depend on how the AIR interface is configured within your local practice software ie. Automated upload may be scheduled daily, weekly, or less frequently.
